31 22:03:00 Morasique i have an odd problem. during bootup, when it's displaying what's happening on the left and [ ok ] or whatever on the right, at a certain point it stops showing the [ ok ]s and stops writing newlines, so all the descriptions of what's happening just show up in a block of text. anybody know what could cause that? i've tried searching for it, but i can't really find any mention of it anywhere.
31 22:08:00 andy753421 i blame Ubuntu for not using sysvinit
31 22:10:00 andy753421 Which one does it stop on?
31 22:11:00 povilus-desktop everyon submitted a complaint to iait?
31 22:17:00 auchter Morasique: using a lot of processing power on addiator, eh?
31 22:19:00 quark hey auchter I got a question
31 22:19:00 quark actually probably better suited for PM
31 22:19:00 auchter alright then
31 22:24:00 Morasique andy753421: sorry, i asked a question and then stopped paying attention. something about VESA, i don't remember the exact line now
31 22:24:00 Morasique and wow, why do i have so many things running on addiator
31 22:24:00 andy753421 Morasique: 'kill -9 -1' ;)
31 22:25:00 Morasique yeah, i just killed it all. i'm not sure why they stayed running though
31 22:25:00 quark auchter: I sent a PM
31 22:25:00 auchter quark: lies.
31 22:25:00 auchter why don't i ever get pms from people... let me send you one
31 22:26:00 tommost It's never worked when I try to send them, either.
31 22:26:00 auchter i got one from andy just fine...
31 22:27:00 auchter quark: did you get my pm?
31 22:28:00 andy753421 auchter: did you get that second PM from me?
31 22:28:00 auchter yup, this would explain it though:

31 22:39:00 andy753421 Morasique: try disabling the thing that it messes up on..
31 22:39:00 andy753421 i don't know why you'd be needing VESA for
31 23:21:00 andy753421 http://www.w3schools.com/jsref/jsref_events.asp
31 23:21:00 andy753421 oops wrong window
31 23:34:00 Morasique andy753421: i disabled the vesa save, and now it messes up on the next line instead :). i think i'm going to have to live with it, i can't imagine what would cause it
31 23:41:00 tommost I just want to point out that Python does indeed have a ternary operator, as of 2.5: http://docs.python.org/whatsnew/pep-308.html
31 23:47:00 sadghost_eee morning
31 23:51:00 auchter tommost: seems awfully backwards and verbose, even after reading the justfication
31 23:51:00 tommost But it exists. That's all that matters.
31 23:51:00 tommost ;-)
31 23:52:00 tommost Good for telling people who complain that Python lacks a ternary operator about.
31 23:52:00 Morasique i think i actually prefer the (false, true)[condition] hack to that
31 23:53:00 andy753421 Morasique: oh, that is nice
31 23:53:00 tommost You mean [condition] and [a] or [b]?
31 23:53:00 andy753421 tommost: also, ruby supports ' "%d, %d" % [123, 456] '
31 23:53:00 andy753421 tommost: _and_ '%' is just a regular method of the string class
31 23:54:00 tommost Ah, good. It sure would be weird if it didn't.
31 23:54:00 tommost In Python it's just a double-underscore method as well.
31 23:54:00 andy753421 what's the __ method called?
31 23:55:00 tommost __mod__
31 23:57:00 tommost They're actually removing it in favor of a format() method in Python 3000, though.
31 23:57:00 tommost I'm not sure that I agree with that.
31 23:57:00 andy753421 tommost: are they making 'format' a global?
31 23:57:00 andy753421 also, 'def %(foo)' is better
31 23:57:00 tommost No, it's a method. Of str and bytes.
31 23:57:00 tommost shrugs
31 23:59:00 tommost They're messing around with strings a lot. The "str" type is becoming the current "unicode" type, and an immutable "bytes" type is serving the old purpose of "str". There's also a new mutable string type called "buffer".
01 00:02:00 povilusr_kaaba C-x M-c M-butterfly, what now vim bitches :p
01 00:02:00 auchter povilusr_kaaba: carpal tunnel
01 00:04:00 andy753421 povilusr_kaaba: does that even do anything?
01 00:05:00 auchter i'm still wondering where the "butterfly" key is, and what the meta key does to it.
01 00:06:00 andy753421 hehe, it's on the 'emacs' keyboard
01 00:06:00 andy753421 they added some extra buttons, and a joystick for playing Tetris
01 00:07:00 sadghost_eee wishes the eee had more storage space
01 00:08:00 auchter wishes that this csse230 homework would do itself.
01 00:09:00 sadghost_eee would have more storage space if the UAF network was not firewalled in 3 sections
01 00:10:00 tommost is confused, because 1 != 4, yet 0 + 1 == 4.
01 00:15:00 tommost comes to the conclusion that pointers are silly.
01 00:15:00 auchter comes to the conclusion that you're doing it wrong
01 00:16:00 tommost figured that out eventually.
01 00:16:00 tommost #define THIS_IS_A_POINTER_MORAN *
01 00:17:00 kleinjt moran?
01 00:17:00 auchter get a brains
01 00:17:00 tommost http://lonewacko.com/images/get-a-brain-morans.jpg
01 00:17:00 auchter ah, i thought that brains was plural for some reason
01 00:20:00 tommost My guess is that I was getting confusing results because when I incremented my pointer it was advancing through Python's cache of small integers... so I didn't figure out that it was pointing to the wrong place because all of the numbers were so close to what I expected.
01 00:20:00 tommost (Working on a Python extension module.)
01 00:39:00 Morasique first! by the way. http://lug.phire.org/irc/luglog.log/2008-02.log

01 00:47:00 povilusr_kaaba i use ubuntu and am a hippie
01 00:47:00 octavious sadghost_eee: blasphemer!

01 00:48:00 Morasique sadghost: i would never have guessed
01 00:49:00 sadghost_eee YAY class is over
01 00:49:00 tommost sadghost_eee: Ubuntu is a word meaning "humanity towards others". You are, by definition, a hippie.
01 00:49:00 sadghost_eee resume this in 15
01 00:50:00 octavious just like i use gentoo, so i am automatically a ricer. same concept.
01 00:50:00 tommost Precisely.
01 00:50:00 auchter heh, awesome, i'm a ricer
01 00:51:00 tommost Mark Pilgrim is the only person who uses Ubuntu who isn't automatically a hippie. ;-)
01 00:51:00 auchter i wonder what my use of openbsd says about me now...
01 00:51:00 tommost Forget OpenBSD... what about Plan9?

01 00:59:00 auchter win.
01 00:59:00 tommost Mark Pilgrim is always amusing.
01 01:00:00 auchter how's that?
01 01:00:00 tommost Some combination of sarcasm and wit.
01 01:01:00 octavious heh. you see the xkcd?
01 01:02:00 shadghost WOOT no class for 13.5 hours
01 01:02:00 tommost Oh, good. I'm fond of nano myself.
01 01:03:00 auchter vi is the only editor
01 01:03:00 octavious heh, lets avoid a editor war...we all know vi is best.
01 01:03:00 andy753421 ah, so that's where that came from
01 01:03:00 auchter acme is pretty awesome as well, though...
01 01:05:00 andy753421 http://andy753421.ath.cx/temp/made_with_cat.png
01 01:05:00 andy753421 forgot where that came from ;)
01 01:06:00 auchter pssh, all my documents are written with dd
01 01:06:00 andy753421 ah, /dev/random ?
01 01:07:00 auchter yes, i predict the output and dd only the bytes i need
01 01:07:00 auchter it takes a while, but i feel i have much more control this way
01 01:07:00 octavious sounds efficient
01 01:08:00 andy753421 also, that way no one can sue you for copyright infringement
01 01:08:00 auchter except maybe bruce schneier
01 01:09:00 octavious well, they _could_ sue you..
01 01:10:00 andy753421 in unrelated news: what do you think about getting mellor to send out an all-csse e-mail about the scripting language presentation series?
01 01:12:00 octavious is nethack installed on any of the public machines?
01 01:13:00 kleinjt we might want to reserve a room or something if we went that route
01 01:14:00 kleinjt er.. to state the somewhat obvious
01 01:16:00 shadghost gone
01 01:16:00 kleinjt and why not include CPEs in the mass email, we get left out of that sort of stuff :/
01 01:29:00 auchter apparently everyone just hates CPEs
01 01:33:00 Morasique auchter: that is true
01 01:34:00 andy753421 kleinjt: how many CPE's would actually care about scripting languages?
01 01:34:00 auchter don't worry, we hate CS's too
01 01:35:00 octavious i thought we were a bunch of hippees. where is the love??
01 01:36:00 auchter andy753421: probably not many, however perl is pretty widely used for test automation
01 01:36:00 auchter love died with the hell these bloody cs classes are putting me through
01 01:37:00 tommost Personally, I think that it should be an all-campus message. And not just one--there should be an e-mail countdown on the hour for about 10 hours preceding each meeting. And by-the-minute e-mails in the last fifteen minutes. And at 5:15 we should automatically ring everyone's phones to ask them why they're not at the LUG meeting. 'Cause anything else would just be shortchanging the presenters.
01 01:38:00 auchter tommost: did you lose a kitten?
01 01:38:00 octavious hahahaha
01 01:38:00 Morasique i'm all for it, if iait can send me hourly e-mails telling me my inbox is full i see no reason lug can't send me hourly e-mails about the presentations
01 01:38:00 tommost No, but I'll take it. I'm running out of Ramen...
01 01:38:00 auchter Morasique: yes, that seemed completely counter-intuitive
01 01:39:00 auchter let's fill up an already full mailbox with more mail! brilliant!
01 01:39:00 Morasique well, it's not full, it's the message telling me i'm getting near full, so apparently they want to speed it along
01 01:39:00 tommost Hey, have they installed that new all-campus speaker system yet? It could be useful...
01 01:39:00 Morasique it's like how windows xp used to pop up a dialog telling me i was dangerously low on memory, and that dialog would push it over the edge and freeze the machine
01 01:40:00 auchter tommost: all campus speaker system? i like where this is going...
01 01:40:00 Morasique did we decide we were getting it? i remember them demoing it, but i never heard if we decided to install one
01 01:40:00 kleinjt Has anyone uh.. tapped into to the emergency speaker system yet?
01 01:40:00 auchter i think the lug needs to be first
01 01:40:00 auchter also, hacking the bell tower would be fun.
01 01:41:00 kleinjt time for some social engineering
01 01:41:00 octavious we need LED art. 1/31...
01 01:42:00 auchter nevar forget
01 01:42:00 Morasique my roommate (a cpe) talks about how he wants to hack the bell tower all the time
01 01:42:00 tommost Yeah, we could tune it while we're at it. Everyone would thank us.
01 01:42:00 auchter we should do it. make a midi->bell tower converter and take requests
01 01:42:00 tommost Brilliant!
01 01:43:00 auchter hell, just have a webpage for people to upload to, haha
01 01:43:00 tommost And the robotics club has wireless RS-232 adapters...
01 01:43:00 auchter how is the bell tower controlled anyway?
01 01:43:00 andy753421 clocktower.dhcp.rose-hulman.edu apparently runs knoppix
01 01:44:00 auchter well, that answers my question.
01 01:44:00 andy753421 and: http://clocktower.dhcp.rose-hulman.edu/
01 01:44:00 octavious the LUG should adopt that kitten. and train in the ways of a ninja
01 01:45:00 kleinjt Could we pass off kitten maintainable costs as a recruitment expense?
01 01:46:00 kleinjt If we promised animals, I'd image we'd get more people at the meetings.
01 01:46:00 auchter creative accounting: the possibilities are endless
01 01:46:00 kleinjt scripting language series, and kittens.
01 01:46:00 kleinjt all campus email ^
01 01:46:00 octavious it seems that at least a portion of the tower control system is written in perl
01 01:47:00 auchter well, can you think of a better language? :)
01 01:49:00 tommost >>>languages.sort(); languages[-1]
01 01:49:00 tommost "Perl"
01 01:49:00 Morasique ouch
01 01:50:00 tommost >>> languages[-2]
01 01:50:00 tommost "Brainf*ck"
01 01:50:00 octavious heh. how poetic.
01 01:51:00 andy753421 tommost: i assume the index represents the amount of coolness?
01 01:51:00 tommost Nope. Pain.
01 01:52:00 sadghost_eee yo
01 01:52:00 auchter the fact that negative indicies are allowed causes me enough pain.
01 01:53:00 tommost How is that painful? It's just like [].slice() in JavaScript.
01 01:54:00 andy753421 hey, do you ECE folks ever get angel space for ece classes?
01 01:54:00 kleinjt map(lambda language: sys.stdout.write(language), languages)
01 01:54:00 andy753421 er, by angel I meant AFS
01 01:54:00 kleinjt python lists are awesome
01 01:54:00 tommost >>> map(sys.stdout.write, languages)
01 01:54:00 andy753421 kleinjt: how is that awesome in any way?
01 01:55:00 kleinjt andy753421: obfuscation
01 01:55:00 andy753421 tom's is a bit better, but prefix notation for map is just horrible
01 01:55:00 kleinjt lambda should be used whenever possible
01 01:55:00 andy753421 kleinjt: also, pythons lambda sucks
01 01:55:00 kleinjt even when not, it should be forced into such situations
01 01:55:00 tommost Not when it creates unnecessary, silly overhead.
01 01:56:00 kleinjt especially when it does
01 01:56:00 tommost What is this, Java?
01 01:56:00 auchter psh, postscript is a much better language
01 01:56:00 auchter reverse polish notation!
01 01:57:00 kleinjt andy753421: how does lambda suck? there are creative workarounds to most of the limits to lambda
01 01:57:00 kleinjt *pythons lambda
01 01:57:00 andy753421 kleinjt: like the fact that it uses special syntax, and can only support a single statement
01 01:58:00 kleinjt It has plenty intuitive syntax. How would you do it?
01 01:59:00 Morasique (lambda vars statements)? :)
01 01:59:00 tommost If lambda isn't enough, just use def. Really. It's not so bad.
01 02:00:00 andy753421 Kernel.method(:lambda) => '#<Method: Kernel.lambda>'
01 02:00:00 kleinjt or just daisy chain lambdas
01 02:00:00 tommost DAISY CHAIN?! SINNER!!!
01 02:01:00 andy753421 kleinjt: or Proc.new
01 02:02:00 tommost I've corrected the name of your presentation on the wiki.
01 02:02:00 kleinjt thanks
01 02:03:00 tommost Oh, and Andy, I have produced a slightly improved version of the LUG wiki stylesheet. It's at the same location.
01 02:03:00 kleinjt I was going to cover other stuff to, and stick stupid lambda tricks in the end as a joke, but ok, I'll focus the whole thing on that if you want
01 02:03:00 tommost You could use Chandler as a counter-example.
01 02:03:00 tommost A Python program written like Jave.
01 02:04:00 tommost *Java.
01 02:05:00 kleinjt (I was going to focus on some of the neat things which python has that are useful, like list comprehension, map, negative indexes, a few list method class, and the range functions whatnot)
01 02:05:00 tommost Oh, that sounds good.
01 02:05:00 kleinjt but yeah, I can make it on stupid stuff too
01 02:05:00 tommost You should also cover metaclasses.
01 02:06:00 kleinjt I haven't run into them yet, I'll do some research or something.
01 02:07:00 tommost Oh, and don't forget decorators.
01 02:08:00 kleinjt (oh, and enumerate)
01 02:08:00 tommost And the functools and itertools modules.
01 02:08:00 tommost Here's an example of metaclass use: http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2008-January/076194.html
01 02:10:00 kleinjt mmkay, awesome. I'll look into those too.
01 02:11:00 kleinjt unless you will be covering all this in the python scripting language series
01 02:11:00 tommost No, I just removed that from the list. You'll be doing plenty.
01 02:12:00 tommost I'll either do Io (once I learn it) or JavaScript in Greasemonkey.
01 02:12:00 auchter i may learn postscript and present on it, too
01 02:13:00 auchter it has the word "script" in it, ergo it must be a scripting language
01 02:13:00 tommost Sounds logical.
01 02:13:00 auchter far from it.
01 02:15:00 kleinjt Who will do vbscript?
01 02:15:00 auchter no one. ever.
01 02:26:00 andy753421 tommost: are metaclasses just pythons term extending an existing class (open classes)?
01 02:27:00 tommost No--that's monkey patching.
01 02:28:00 tommost Metaclasses modify the class itself when the class object is created, I think. I'm not totally clear on how exactly this works, though.
01 02:28:00 andy753421 tommost: so what's the use of it?
01 02:29:00 tommost I know that the Django web framework uses it on "Model" subclasses (classes representing tables in the database) to replace attributes with getters/setters that are used to lazily get data from the database, and a whole lot more.
01 02:30:00 tommost http://code.djangoproject.com/browser/django/trunk/django/db/models/base.py
01 02:30:00 andy753421 so how's that different than 'monkey-coding'?
01 02:30:00 tommost Monkey-coding? Is that like monkey patching?
01 02:30:00 andy753421 er, yea
01 02:32:00 tommost It's completely different--monkey patching is a hack. You're modifying a class outside of its definition to make it do something that it didn't before. Metaclasses are built into the Python language--they're not a hack, and they're not susceptible to the brittleness of monkey patching.
01 02:32:00 andy753421 so it's basically maps 'foo.get("bar")' to foo.bar? where bar is determined at runtime?
01 02:32:00 tommost They're used to accomplish totally different things.
01 02:32:00 tommost The Django code?
01 02:33:00 andy753421 ah, there's an IBM article on it
01 03:12:00 auchter
01 10:49:00 bolandmg Would anyone know of a place on campus where I could keep a server? I've got one running Moodle but running the server from my apartment's connection isn't an option.
01 10:58:00 bolandmg Well, I suppose nobody's around now. I'll check back later.
01 16:30:00 Zeta_RHIT Response from IAIT on the VPN issue... :(
01 16:30:00 Zeta_RHIT "I am the administrator of the VPN. The Nortel Client uses XAUTH authentication, which is a proprietary vendor-specific extension to the IPSEC protocol (Cisco has their own, as well). The XAUTH extension allows the use of RADIUS on the backend for authentication. As currently configured, our VPN does not use the traditional IPSEC preshared key. As I previously stated, 64 bit Windows is not supported."
01 16:31:00 Zeta_RHIT This also applies to linux, which he neglected to mention
01 16:31:00 auchter tell them to pick a reasonable protocol next time.
01 16:32:00 Zeta_RHIT I know...
01 16:32:00 auchter this is why proprietary stuff is bad
01 16:32:00 Zeta_RHIT I could swear IPSEC and Radius can work together w/o proprietary crap
01 16:33:00 Zeta_RHIT Any ideas on who to go to next?
01 16:33:00 Zeta_RHIT Since they're not going to do anything about it
01 16:33:00 auchter well, you could just use pptp like i do
02 23:05:00 tommost So my laptop automatically blanks the screen after about 10 minutes without any input (keyboard, mouse). This is regardless of my Gnome power settings, which have all of that stuff disabled. It also happens regardless of what is running, e.g., it happens when Totem is playing a video, even though I'd expect Totem to stop that from happening. Any ideas?
02 23:09:00 andy753421 grep 'time' /etc/X11/xorg.conf
02 23:11:00 tommost Nothing.
02 23:12:00 andy753421 try 'xset q'
02 23:13:00 tommost There's output. What am I looking for?
02 23:13:00 tommost Screen Saver:
02 23:13:00 tommost prefer blanking: yes allow exposures: yes
02 23:13:00 tommost timeout: 0 cycle: 0
02 23:15:00 andy753421 mine gives a timeout for blanking
02 23:15:00 andy753421 also, DPMS stuff
02 23:15:00 tommost DPMS (Energy Star):
02 23:15:00 tommost Display is not capable of DPMS
02 23:16:00 andy753421 haha, you loose
02 23:16:00 tommost What's DPMS?
02 23:16:00 tommost Oh, nvm.
02 23:18:00 tommost Any more ideas? Is anyone else with a nw8440 experiencing this?
02 23:19:00 andy753421 does it happen when you're not using gnome?
02 23:20:00 tommost I've never not used Gnome.
02 23:20:00 andy753421 you could try it
02 23:21:00 tommost What would you recommend trying? KDE?
02 23:21:00 tommost Or something more minimalist?
02 23:22:00 andy753421 try just running 'X :0' and let it sit for a while when you're away sometime
03 01:04:00 tommost andy######: I did as you suggested. It blanked after a while.
03 01:08:00 auchter whoa crazy octothorpes
03 01:10:00 tommost auchter: I have a new favorite word.
03 01:11:00 auchter haha, i was just puzzles why you typed it out
03 01:11:00 tommost Just making a point.
03 01:11:00 auchter ah, i see. normally just hitting tab suffices
03 01:11:00 tommost Ah. I didn't know about that.
03 01:12:00 tommost I was actually just thinking that I should file an enhancement bug suggesting inline completion.
03 01:12:00 auchter well then, i save you some time
03 01:12:00 tommost Yup. Thanks.
03 01:13:00 auchter so apparently i've lost my english skills after listening to russian for almost three hours
03 01:13:00 auchter judging by the mistakes i'm making all over
03 01:13:00 andy753421 auchter: can you speak russian yet?
03 01:13:00 auchter andy753421: i've never attempted it, i just watched Solaris
03 01:14:00 andy753421 good?
03 01:15:00 auchter excellent, much better than the ~2000s version.
03 01:25:00 tommost andy753421: Any idea what's happening with my monitor blanking?
03 01:32:00 andy753421 try add 'Option "{Blank,Standby,Suspend,Off}Time" "0"' to the ServerFlags section of xorg conf and see if it helps
03 01:39:00 tommost Okay.
03 01:57:00 andy753421 http://www.schooldish.com/NR/rdonlyres/DD2D3BC2-4BAC-46A9-8FF4-42D34CB26FFB/0/20072008DiningStylesComments.xls
03 01:58:00 andy753421 i'm not sure how i managed to get on the list of students who want to be updated on upcoming dining events.. but it kind of pisses me off that they put my name, email address, and phone number up on google
03 02:00:00 tommost Heh... my crazy old roommate is on that list.
03 02:02:00 auchter i don't see any names in that document...
03 02:02:00 tommost Fourth sheet.
03 02:03:00 auchter that would help.
03 02:03:00 octavious andy753421: you might want to talk to Mark Farner about that
03 02:03:00 octavious it is kind of messed up
03 02:06:00 auchter entertaining to read the comments though.
03 02:06:00 tommost It is.
03 02:07:00 tommost We should mirror this somewhere.
03 02:07:00 tommost LOL: "more free ipods"
03 02:08:00 andy753421 tommost: I would rather avoid getting more spam
03 02:08:00 tommost Yeah, not that part.
03 02:08:00 octavious haha
03 02:08:00 octavious I never eat on campus therefore I have nothing to say about the dining service.
03 02:08:00 octavious why is it even included?
03 02:10:00 auchter i don't eat on campus and i have a ton of complaints...
03 02:12:00 tommost What really pisses me off is the rice--they have what must be the cheapest rice available. What would rice that doesn't taste bad cost? Like, 5 cents more per pound or something?
03 02:13:00 andy753421 tommost: whitch type? the white rice or the wild rice?
03 02:13:00 tommost White. I wasn't even aware of any wild rice.
03 02:14:00 tommost And all of their rice dishes are awful, too. They outright taste bad.
03 02:14:00 andy753421 it's usually on the center thing, it's longer and has black/green stuff in it
03 02:14:00 auchter i bought a 25 pound bag of rice for $12 at the beginning of the year and it tastes excellent. in the quantities they buy it in it is probably dirt cheap
03 02:14:00 auchter i also blame their cooking method, though
03 02:14:00 andy753421 yea, we got 50 lb. from sams and it's not to bad
03 02:14:00 auchter i just get mine at the asian market
03 02:15:00 auchter 25lb jasmine rice, 20lb basmati and i'm set.
03 02:15:00 andy753421 yea, different types taste different too
03 02:15:00 auchter and all for less than the cost of a day of meals at the ARA
03 02:15:00 tommost What do you do for lunch?
03 02:16:00 auchter cook my own or go out to eat
03 02:16:00 auchter $3 for hummous and tabboleh at george's in town... really can't beat that.
03 02:16:00 tommost Ah, but you have a car. I'm jealous.
03 02:17:00 auchter yes, that does help. living on campus and having a car really isn't beneficial though
03 02:17:00 auchter since you're required to eat their horrible food
03 02:18:00 tommost Yeah, that pisses me off.
03 02:18:00 tommost And it's all so salty, too.
03 02:18:00 auchter indeed. paying a ton to eat pasta essentially all the time gets old
03 02:18:00 auchter since i can't really take deep fried food, that was my only choice
03 02:19:00 tommost I can survive it--in fact, it's a better option than most of the others. It's more difficult to mess up deep frying.
03 02:20:00 auchter they still occasionally manage to. how they do it is a mystery to me.
03 02:21:00 tommost The hours are awful, too. I'm not actually hungry until 7:00 pm or so, at the earliest.
03 02:22:00 auchter i'm usually not awake by 1:00 on saturdays/sundays, so no lunch was no fun last year
03 02:23:00 tommost Yeah. I have nearly missed meals several times on those days. I have recently discovered the joys of taking sandwiches for later, though.
03 02:23:00 tommost In fact, I am eating a cookie that I picked up on Wednesday right now! It tastes about the same.
03 02:24:00 tommost "The workers at the coffee cart are too friendly."
03 02:25:00 auchter their coffee is horrible. then again, i am a bit particular about that...
03 04:28:00 andy753421 Map the Rose Network! http://andy753421.ath.cx/whereami/
03 12:06:00 Morasique andy: don't we already have this map?
03 12:27:00 andy753422 Morasique: um, I don't
03 12:35:00 Morasique http://137.112.138.172/ips.txt
03 12:38:00 andy753422 Morasique: that's just res halls though
03 12:38:00 Morasique i talked to iait about mapping the academic buildings freshman year for a program i wanted to write, but apparently it can't be done, you can't tell from the ip you're assigned where you are
03 12:40:00 andy753422 Hm.. I don't entirely believe that
03 12:40:00 Morasique it's possible they were lying, i never looked into it. it was freshman year, i still believed iait knew things
03 12:41:00 andy753422 heh, they may have been referring to wireless/vpn
03 12:41:00 andy753422 or maybe they actually were right
03 12:52:00 rr72 :-D
03 12:53:00 rr72 Class of '12 :-D
03 12:53:00 rr72 maybe
03 12:56:00 rr72 collinjc~ guess what I got today.
03 13:00:00 collinjc What's that?
03 13:01:00 rr72 A letter from Terre Haute :-D
03 13:01:00 collinjc About what?
03 13:01:00 rr72 Speficily a college ;-D
03 13:01:00 rr72 oops :-D
03 13:02:00 collinjc Wait, the letter is from a college?
03 13:02:00 rr72 I possibly could be infecting your campus next year '12!
03 13:02:00 rr72 Acceptance letter from Rose!
03 13:02:00 collinjc Hahaha! Congratulations!!
03 13:03:00 collinjc That's awesome!
03 13:04:00 rr72 I want to drive down and hand 250 in cash idkw
03 13:05:00 collinjc Hahaha!
03 13:06:00 rr72 there a citibank in town?
03 13:07:00 collinjc I'm not entirely sure. I'd have to check online.
03 13:07:00 rr72 I can do that heh
03 13:07:00 rr72 That is a LARGE factor. I need money. JK!
03 13:08:00 collinjc I can't seem to find one, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it isn't there.
03 13:08:00 rr72 dumbs ass! sorry me
03 13:08:00 rr72 going to text google citibank terre haute
03 13:08:00 collinjc Hey, so do you know what courses you'll be taking next quarter?
03 13:08:00 rr72 no idea
03 13:09:00 rr72 ATM in the speedway
03 13:09:00 rr72 three of them around there
03 13:09:00 collinjc Awesome. That's not too far, either.
03 13:10:00 rr72 Thinking about EE track. still not sure if going there. prolly one more visit before make up mind. prolly will go. only college i actuelly applied too lol
03 13:11:00 collinjc Haha! EE is a cool major
03 13:14:00 rr72 what major are you?
03 13:14:00 collinjc CPE
03 13:15:00 rr72 computer program engineer?
03 13:16:00 rr72 hey tommost, maybe future classmate
03 13:16:00 tommost ?
03 13:16:00 collinjc Computer engineer. The P is there to distinguish it from chemical engineer or something.
03 13:16:00 collinjc Or maybe civil. I can't remember.
03 13:18:00 rr72 i was thinking wtf is computer program engineer, thats comp sci basicly
03 13:18:00 rr72 tommost~ special letter came today
03 13:19:00 tommost Ah, okay.
03 13:23:00 auchter ah, nothing like mail on a sunday
03 13:25:00 collinjc Some pretty awesome mail though
03 13:26:00 rr72 oh i guess i got it yesterday then
03 13:26:00 rr72 lmao
03 13:27:00 rr72 i don't check mail
03 13:34:00 rr72 bbl
03 13:34:00 rr72_ what happened to the prefixed that was going to be like register rr and have everything behind it. like rr_food rr_bed and stuff
03 13:35:00 rr72_ GHXTi was talking about it, don't know how long ago. was actuelly on the freenode test server
03 14:19:00 Zeta_RHIT exit
03 14:26:00 Blazeix fail
03 16:00:00 andy753421 hm.. i wonder if I consistently keep my daily/weekly bandwidth above 3/5Gb if it will only register as 'going over' once
03 16:00:00 auchter i seem to recall them assessing it once a day when i did that
03 16:05:00 Morasique andy: :D we had this idea earlier this year and tried it, it keeps registering it every 24 hours as being over
03 16:10:00 andy753421 Also, has anyone found a way to check bandwidth usage other than though IAIT's website?
03 16:11:00 auchter i havent yet. last year i wrote a perl script to hit the page every hour and write current usage to a file
03 16:12:00 Morasique i wrote a program for it: http://137.112.138.172/bandwidth.png
03 16:12:00 andy753421 Morasique: does that ping the web server too?
03 16:12:00 Morasique yeah, it just screen scrapes the page
03 16:13:00 andy753421 ok.. i wonder if filing a ticket with IAIT would get anywhere
03 16:13:00 Morasique you want a flat interface to it?
03 16:14:00 andy753421 Morasique: something where I don't have to parse http, and that will hopefully respond faster
03 16:14:00 Morasique ah
03 16:14:00 auchter i filed a ticket last year requesting just a plain text page, and they never responded
03 16:14:00 Morasique auchter: yeah, that seems like the kind of thing they'd just ignore
03 16:14:00 auchter i'd still give it a try though
03 16:15:00 tommost Really, though, the page they provide is trivially easy to parse--it's valid XML.
03 16:16:00 Morasique it is, you can just look for <span class='(valid|warning|invalid)'>
03 16:43:00 rr72 how do they keep track? mac/ips ...
03 16:43:00 Morasique by username
03 16:43:00 Morasique you register your mac addresses
03 16:43:00 andy753421 rr72: you have to register your mac address, then they track those
03 16:44:00 rr72 psh, gotcha
03 16:44:00 rr72 so all of your devices jointly have that limit
03 16:44:00 tommost Yes.
03 16:44:00 rr72 bbl super bowl party next door
03 16:45:00 auchter mmm, bowl of soup
03 16:47:00 octavious jesus. cryptonomicon never ends
03 16:47:00 octavious i have been reading it forever and i am only half way through it
03 16:48:00 auchter octavious: my roommate's girlfriend read it in about two weeks last month. that was insanity.
03 17:00:00 Morasique i managed to not even know about the superbowl all day; the absolute last place i would've thought i'd be reminded is #rhlug
03 17:00:00 tommost Yeah, I only found out yesterday/early this morning.
03 17:01:00 andy753421 Morasique: heh, yea my roommate mentioned that it was tonight about 30 seconds before rr72 did
03 17:01:00 andy753421 unfortunately, i now have another excuse not to do my homework
03 17:02:00 auchter yeah... hopefully not too many insane people on the roads tonight because of it, i'm going to bloomington for a concert....
03 17:02:00 andy753421 hm, actually, what time does it start?
03 17:02:00 andy753421 i might have to TA though it
03 17:08:00 tommost andy753421: Looks like the Ubuntu upgrade has started. I can't connect to SVN.
03 17:08:00 andy753421 tommost: yea, ssh is down as well
03 17:09:00 auchter yeah, kevin was there when i stopped by around an hour ago
03 18:37:00 tommost Gnome is being really quirky. :-(
03 18:38:00 tommost It won't load most of my deskbar applets or my desktop background.
03 18:40:00 tommost I'm going to try KDE, though the way every single think starts with a K really annoys me.
03 18:41:00 tommost *thing.
03 18:43:00 tommost KDE is really big :-(
03 18:44:00 andy753421 tommost: xfce? although kde4 might be interesting
03 18:44:00 andy753421 also, what do you need a DE for?
03 18:44:00 tommost I've dealt with xfce a little.. I wasn't especially fond of it.
03 18:45:00 tommost I like Gnome... the deskbar, etc.
03 18:47:00 tommost My system's just been generally quirky, e.g., the disappearing OpenOffice icons.
03 18:48:00 tommost Perhaps this is Windows thinking, but I might just wipe it.
03 18:48:00 andy753421 tommost: is it a problem with your user account?
03 18:48:00 tommost I did the initial installation ridiculously quickly because I was leaving.
03 18:48:00 tommost I don't know.
03 18:48:00 andy753421 try making an new user account and then seeing if stuff is strange there as well
03 18:49:00 tommost There seems to be something wrong wit GConf... it fails to load every couple of times I log in.
03 18:49:00 andy753421 if not, then you can just delete all the gnome settings out of ~
03 18:50:00 tommost I'm tempted to do something more minimalist, like your setup.
03 18:50:00 andy753421 mv ~/.(gconf|gnome)* ~/backup
03 18:50:00 andy753421 you can get panels and stuff that deskbar will run in and not have to use the rest of gnome as well
03 19:13:00 tommost I am now under KDE. It is a shiny, glittery abomination.
03 19:13:00 auchter use dwm!
03 19:14:00 andy753421 tommost: 3.5 or 4.0?
03 19:14:00 tommost 3.5. And it is incredibly laggy.
03 19:15:00 andy753421 E17!
03 19:15:00 auchter now that's something i could endorse as well
03 19:16:00 tommost ?
03 19:17:00 auchter http://enlightenment.org
03 19:17:00 tommost Oh, Enlightenment.
03 19:18:00 tommost Yeah, that was next on my list.
03 19:18:00 tommost Alongside ratpoison.
03 19:18:00 auchter yes, i would recommend you give a tiling window manager a try
03 19:18:00 auchter http://www.suckless.org/wiki/dwm is what i use
03 19:19:00 tommost I know. But I like anti-aliased fonts. I'm willing to give up Compiz, but my fonts must be readable.
03 19:19:00 auchter there's nothing stopping you from using anti-aliased fonts with dwm
03 19:19:00 auchter it's just that i find them unreadable, and don't use them
03 19:20:00 tommost Oh, okay.
03 19:26:00 andy753421 dang tom, have enough processes running on addiator?
03 19:27:00 tommost My laptops in dwm. *How do I open programs?!*
03 19:28:00 auchter ctrl-alt-enter to start a terminal
03 19:28:00 auchter alt-p to run dmenu (assuming you have it installed, which you probably should do if you don't)
03 19:29:00 tommost Nothing happens.
03 19:29:00 auchter do you have rxvt installed? that's what the default terminal program is
03 19:30:00 tommost_laptop Installing...
03 19:30:00 auchter or, just edit config.h to spawn the terminal of your choice
03 19:30:00 auchter personally, i use urxvtc with urxvtd
03 19:31:00 tommost_laptop That it's name is impossible to pronounce is enough to scare me away from that one.
03 19:31:00 tommost_laptop *its
03 19:32:00 auchter much lighter on resources than xterm or what have you
03 19:32:00 tommost_laptop Core 2 Duo => don't care.
03 19:32:00 andy753421 auchter: seems like an interesting idea
03 19:32:00 andy753421 but xterm is still fast enough that I don't really notice it
03 19:33:00 auchter i sometimes have >20 terminals open, so it helps.
03 19:33:00 auchter plus the link highlighting, etc. is nice
03 19:38:00 andy753421 auchter: I was looking at that kerneltrap post about the vim bug, that array initialization is crazy
03 19:39:00 auchter yeah, it hurt my head trying to parse it
03 19:41:00 auchter does the preprocessor expand ...?
03 19:41:00 andy753421 no, that's apparently a C thing
03 19:41:00 andy753421 I was trying to look up documentation on it, but I had no idea where to find stuff like that
03 19:41:00 auchter really. i didn't know that
03 19:42:00 andy753421 auchter: yea, i couldn't figure it out, so I started trying things
03 19:47:00 andy753421 apparently {[0 ... 2] = -1, 3, 4, 5, 6, [5 ... 7] = -2} is the same as {-1, -1, -1, 3, 4, -2, -2, -2}
03 19:49:00 auchter i just searched through K&R, and the only mention of ... i could find functions with variable numbers of arguments
03 19:50:00 andy753421 personally, i want to blame stallman for it
03 19:51:00 auchter is it specific to gcc?
03 19:52:00 andy753421 i don't know, it seems like something that would be, but you dont have to use any strange compile options or anything
03 19:53:00 auchter http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.compilers.pcc/638
03 19:53:00 auchter "AFAIK there are no specifications for it other than the gcc manual."
03 19:54:00 tommost_laptop How do I exit dwm?
03 19:55:00 auchter ctrl-alt-backspace
03 19:55:00 tommost_laptop Seriously?
03 19:56:00 tommost_laptop sighs
03 19:57:00 auchter i fail to see the problem with it...
03 19:57:00 auchter http://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc-4.2.3/gcc/Designated-Inits.html#Designated-Inits
03 19:57:00 auchter finally found it.
03 20:34:00 auchter Blazeix: ping
03 21:28:00 Morasique this is my new anti-work script, i plan on leaving it running often:
03 21:28:00 Morasique #!/bin/bash
03 21:28:00 Morasique while [ -z `pgrep UrbanTerror` ]; do
03 21:28:00 Morasique notify-send -u critical -t 5000 "Urban Terror" "It doesn't look like you're playing Urban Terror"
03 21:28:00 Morasique sleep 5
03 21:28:00 Morasique done
03 21:28:00 Morasique (urban terror is an fps)
03 21:29:00 auchter there should be a rhit ut server
03 21:29:00 auchter i'd be interested in playing sometimes
03 21:30:00 Morasique my room plays way more than we should, it's thoroughly entertaining
03 21:30:00 Morasique does ut work on linux?
03 21:31:00 auchter by ut i meant urban terror. i suppose urt is the correct abbreviation
03 21:31:00 Morasique ah. yeah, usually ut is unreal tournament
03 22:45:00 Morasique does anybody use ksnapshot? for some reason anytime i use it compiz starts taking up the whole processor and my system never really recovers, it lags until i restart it
03 22:49:00 andy753421 Morasique: nope, do other screenshot programs do the same?
03 22:49:00 Morasique andy753421: i've never tried any others, but i guess i'll have to look into it
03 22:52:00 andy753421 Morasique: try 'import -window root screenshot.png'
03 23:22:00 tommost Okay, so I've tried ratpoison and enlightenment. The former is from the Emacs crowd--every single thing you wan to do must be prefixed with a C-t. The latter is from the "bitmap text is better," crowd, despite the fact that it makes the text 9 freaking pixels tall.
03 23:23:00 tommost Also, KDE won't uninstall. It may be time to wipe and reload.
03 23:23:00 andy753421 tommost: actually i think E is from the 'bitmap text is faster' crowd
03 23:24:00 tommost They why was it so slow?
03 23:24:00 andy753421 won't uninstall?
03 23:24:00 tommost An apt-get remove kubuntu-desktop doesn't remove any of the applications that it installed.
03 23:24:00 tommost I either wipe my machine, or uninstall K* manually. The first option would be faster.
03 23:25:00 tommost And they I could switch to 32-bit, which makes Flash player less of a crashy, buggy pain.
03 23:26:00 tommost (It is currently the source of regular Firefox crashes.)
03 23:26:00 andy753421 ah, ok, then
03 23:26:00 andy753421 also, isn't there a apt-get purge/autoremove or something that will uninstal dependencies?
03 23:26:00 tommost Yeah, I've tried autoremove.
03 23:27:00 tommost purge doesn't do anything, either.
03 23:28:00 tommost I can't get gnome-panel to work under ratpoison, or I'd go with that.
03 23:28:00 andy753421 strange, go gentoo :) haven't had to reinstall my desktop/server since high school when i switched from slackware
03 23:29:00 andy753421 what would you be using gnome-panel for? just deskbar?
03 23:30:00 tommost Actually, I misspoke before. I don't use deskbar at all. Mainly I want all of the notification icons, like the power and network management ones.
03 23:30:00 tommost Also, Bluetooth.
03 23:31:00 andy753421 tommost: there's some program to draw on the root window, also, gkrellm has a lot of that suff
03 23:32:00 andy753421 personally, i just wrote a bash script to display all that stuff along the bottom of my screen
03 23:33:00 andy753421 (2 desk sensors from my desktop, 4 temp sensors from my laptop, 1 fans speeds battery life and charge state, cpu frequency, and time/date)
03 23:33:00 andy753421 *disk sensors
03 23:33:00 tommost I don't know bash. Nor to I particularly want to learn it.
03 23:34:00 tommost I think that I'll be ditching Compiz, though. I suspect that it has been the source of my recent troubles.
03 23:34:00 andy753421 tommost: alright, you could do it in python just as easily, mine mostly consists of running sed/awk on various files
03 23:36:00 tommost The trouble with these minimalist window managers is that they reduce everything to a set of primitives and expect you to basically script your own user interface. I don't want to mess with that right now--I just want it to work.
03 23:36:00 andy753421 ah, that's what it was called: http://conky.sourceforge.net/
03 23:37:00 andy753421 i've never used it, but i hear some people like it
03 23:37:00 auchter i used to use conky, no complaints
03 23:37:00 auchter but dwm just reads from stdin, which is nicer
03 23:38:00 auchter also, dzen is pretty cool: http://gotmor.googlepages.com/dzen
03 23:39:00 auchter much more flexible than gnome's bar
03 23:39:00 tommost I don't really care about flexibility right now. I just want a few silly little icons to display. It seems like this should be possible.
03 23:41:00 tommost I also want something that works well with multiple monitors.
03 23:41:00 rr_lap tommost: now you are pushing it
03 23:42:00 andy753421 tommost: well.. if you'd like to give me two monitors, i'll do some research for you ;)
03 23:43:00 andy753421 i think i just realized that mike and tom are complete opposites
03 23:43:00 tommost Yup. I don't care how much memory it uses and I like my fonts large and antialiased.
03 23:44:00 tommost Maybe I'll take up emacs, just to complete the polarization.
03 23:44:00 auchter i'd be content with the knowlege that my way is the sane way
03 23:45:00 tommost http://www.freenet.org.nz/python/pywm/
03 23:45:00 auchter that is horrible
03 23:45:00 andy753421 tommost: isn't that the one that you /have/ to script?
03 23:46:00 tommost I suppose, but at least it's not in bash.
03 23:46:00 auchter i can't think of a wm that requires you to script in bash
03 23:46:00 andy753421 you see, the nice thing about bash, is that text is a universal interface
03 23:47:00 tommost Awww... no Ubuntu package.
03 23:49:00 auchter i find pywm disgusting and revolting
03 23:50:00 tommost I haven't really looked into it closely. What's so bad?
03 23:50:00 andy753421 tommost: tom suggested it :P
03 23:51:00 auchter it looks horrible for one. secondly, i'm still trying to come up with a scenario in which i wouldn't think it completely idiotic to code a wm in python
03 23:52:00 tommost When you have a Core 2 Duo and 2 GB of RAM?
03 23:52:00 tommost One after your own heart: http://perlwm.sourceforge.net/
03 23:52:00 auchter if you really want to waste memory, openoffice usually suffices
03 23:53:00 auchter and before i even click that link, let me say that it is a stupid idea as well, haha
03 23:53:00 tommost That's the other reason I'll probably reformat--OpenOffice is messed up.
03 23:53:00 andy753421 gnome office!
03 23:53:00 tommost ?
03 23:53:00 auchter http://perlwm.sourceforge.net/images/shot.png <-- look at me! i look like i'm from 1992!
03 23:54:00 andy753421 apparently, gnome toke gnumeric, abiword, dia, and a few other random programs and started calling them 'Gnome Office'
03 23:54:00 tommost Egh. I hate Abiword even more thatn OO.o Writer.
03 23:54:00 auchter we need suckless-office
03 23:54:00 andy753421 auchter: vim?
03 23:55:00 tommost auchter: LaTeX?
03 23:55:00 auchter vim's pretty bloated, really
03 23:55:00 andy753421 (and 'column -t' for spreadsheets)
03 23:56:00 auchter the problem with vim/column -t is the lack of being able to do mathematical expressions
03 23:56:00 andy753421 psh, nobody likes math
03 23:57:00 auchter being able to mulitply one cell by another is handy
03 23:57:00 andy753421 oh, i've just got the best idea ever
03 23:57:00 andy753421 a self replicating spreadsheet!
03 23:58:00 auchter ...explain, though i'm sure i'll want to lobotomize myself when you're done
03 23:59:00 andy753421 hehe, some bash/perl/ruby/m4 script at the top, then a bunch of tabular data, then you run the script on itself and it generates output
04 00:00:00 auchter that's... actually not a bad idea at all
04 00:00:00 auchter it solves my main complaint.
04 00:02:00 auchter oh, how about postscript that generates valid postscript for printing
04 00:02:00 andy753421 auchter: have you ever looked at postscript?
04 00:03:00 auchter yeah, and i need to find some time to learn it
04 00:03:00 andy753421 it seemed to me like it is way to focused on presentation to be useful
04 00:03:00 auchter perhaps, but it uses RPN
04 00:03:00 andy753421 auchter: forth/factor/joy
04 00:05:00 rr_lap night a;;
04 00:05:00 rr_lap ;;
04 00:05:00 rr_lap ll
04 00:06:00 auchter andy753421: intriguing.
04 00:35:00 andy753421 auchter: http://andy753421.ath.cx/temp/spread.m4
04 00:36:00 tommost I'm liking wmii so far, aside from the fact that it doesn't let me type "j".
04 00:36:00 andy753421 tommost: it lets me type j...
04 00:36:00 Morasiqu1 useless letter anyway, you're better off
04 00:36:00 tommost "j" as in "/join" ;-)
04 00:42:00 auchter andy753421: i don't understand m4, i'll take another look at it tomorrow
04 00:43:00 auchter my main concern is whether or not these donuts "Starting 1st hour" means that they will be available prior to my first hour class
04 00:43:00 auchter however, sometime is telling me no.
04 00:47:00 andy753421 auchter: m4's awesome, turing complete and based solely on macro expansion
04 00:48:00 auchter i briefly read about it, but not enough to understand the syntax yet
04 00:49:00 andy753421 yea, if you replace ` with ( and ' with ) it looks a bit like lisp
04 00:58:00 tommost Very weird... wmii doesn't respond to my keypresses at all. I type M-p and nothing happens. Same with M-Enter
04 00:59:00 andy753421 tommost: are you running xbindkeys or anything?
04 00:59:00 tommost I have xbindkeys installed, but I haven't configured it at all. Besides, these things were working just a moment ago.
04 00:59:00 andy753421 also, make sure the rc files are set up correctly, all the key commands are defined in wmiirc/rc.wmii
04 01:00:00 andy753421 i had problems at one point when I tried to use invalid keys in .xbindkeysrc
04 01:01:00 andy753421 not sure if it's related though
04 01:04:00 tommost I have no .xbindkeysrc.
04 01:06:00 tommost Egh. Whatever. I'll stick with a fresh Gnome for the moment.
04 01:29:00 Morasiqu1 is there a way to force umount to unmount? -f has never worked for me
04 01:29:00 andy753421 umount -l
04 01:30:00 andy753421 Morasiqu1: what's it for?
04 01:30:00 andy753421 that's generally not a good thing to do though..
04 01:30:00 Morasiqu1 i lost my connection to my desktop, and if i try to unmount my shares to it i get "umount: device is busy", if i try to -f it i get "umount2: device or resource busy"
04 01:31:00 Morasiqu1 anytime i've ever has umount fail, the -f switch has never helped, i don't even know why it's there
04 01:31:00 andy753421 yea, i use -l when that happens..
04 01:31:00 andy753421 but you'll get zombies laying around
04 01:32:00 andy753421 well, i guess they're not called zombies..
04 01:32:00 Morasiqu1 :)
04 01:32:00 andy753421 but processes stuck in uninterpretable sleep
04 09:21:00 andy753421 response to my request about a better bandwidth usage tool: 'The data is stored in a MySQL database, which we do not want to make publicly available.'
04 09:22:00 Morasique nice
04 14:49:00 shadghost http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/20/eee-pc-with-all-the-hacks-but-can-it-ever-learn-to-love/
04 15:29:00 povilusr iait say: I did not say that certificate authentication was impossible, rather, at this time we are not supporting certificate authentication. Supported configurations are Windows XP 32 bit with the Nortel VPN Client and PPTP.
04 15:29:00 povilusr i say:
04 15:29:00 povilusr If you cannot support this, can we set up our own vpn that will support those students you refuse to support? I feel confident I can do it in under 2 hours with less than $100 (less than one quarters technology fee). I suggest you purchase one of these fine products from Linksys
04 15:29:00 povilusr (http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-BEFVP41-EtherFast-Router-4-Port/dp/B00005Y7DQ) if you feel changing your current configuration is to difficult. If you require assistance with setting this product up or require help with changing your current hardware to support this protocol, I can provide assistance for $100 an hour.
04 15:30:00 povilusr I have worked for the U.S. government doing this exact kind of work for 3 years.
04 15:31:00 auchter haha, i like your approach
04 15:32:00 povilusr i suggest outbidding me right now
04 15:32:00 povilusr please somone go bit $90 an hour
04 15:32:00 povilusr bid*
04 15:33:00 auchter i would, but i'm doubtful that router would handle any significant amount of traffic
04 15:33:00 auchter i'd rather just see an openbsd box acting as a vpn
04 15:34:00 povilusr you have the problem of bandwith with both though
04 15:34:00 povilusr ne mac on the wan side
04 15:34:00 povilusr one*
04 15:34:00 povilusr maby 4
04 15:34:00 povilusr on the lan side
04 15:34:00 povilusr so it would be 1 per person/apartment
04 15:34:00 auchter i was thinking more in terms of processing power
04 15:34:00 povilusr aye
04 15:35:00 povilusr but i littraly only use if for matlab
04 15:35:00 auchter i sent you a pam
04 15:35:00 auchter s/pam/pm/
04 15:36:00 auchter assuming you're registered on freenode, that is
04 15:36:00 povilusr i got the pm but im not
04 15:36:00 povilusr whats the command i prolly hsould
04 15:37:00 auchter the command is /msg <username> message, but you should just be able to type back in whatever box popped up
04 15:37:00 povilusr no, to register
04 15:37:00 andy753421 /msg nickserv help
04 15:37:00 TheRoot Type: /msg NickServ HELP REGISTER for more information
04 15:38:00 Morasique we're currently learning in project management how to teach your teammates things by osmosis. i knew i should've skipped class today
04 15:39:00 andy753421 Morasique: I think IRC counts as osmotic communication
04 15:41:00 Morasique all of my classes are osmotic communication, 95% of my attention is on reddit programming, 3% is the lug channel, 2% is accidentally hearing what the professor is saying
04 15:41:00 povilusr morasique, go outbid me, you know you want to:p
04 15:42:00 auchter i want to be able to learn by the same mechanism my caffeine is delivered
04 15:43:00 auchter speaking of which, i need to go make coffee.
04 15:53:00 Morasique povilusr: i don't know anything about that, i just live on campus so i don't have to deal with vpn :)
04 15:54:00 povilusr We have solved your issue
04 15:54:00 povilusr Solution: The VPN configuration will remain as it is.
04 15:54:00 povilusr i beleive it is jakubuski time
04 15:55:00 auchter haha, awesome.
04 15:55:00 Morasique they should have a closed option other than Solved, like WONTFIX in bugzilla, they've "Solved" my issues like that before
04 15:56:00 auchter we should all submit tickets for public key login on dfs again
04 15:57:00 andy753421 somebody should make a script that you can click on and it will auto-fill the form for a particular ticket
04 15:58:00 Morasique does anybody know if sliderule and abacus are down permanently? i assumed they were, but i'm going through my old iait tickets and apparently i told them they were down in august and they said they were being upgraded and would be back up soon
04 15:58:00 povilus-desktop yeah, be ready for letter to jakabouski on thursday
04 16:00:00 andy753421 sliderule was down a couple weeks ago, but it's back up again
04 16:00:00 andy753421 you have to use public key ssh to log in though..
04 16:00:00 TheRoot stupid moving between class and the lab.
04 16:01:00 Morasique povilus: you should word it like lug is a fringe terrorist group. "mr. jakubowski, if you do not resolve this issue, things will be most unpleasant for your....'network'"
04 16:01:00 povilusr aye
04 16:01:00 Morasique andy753421: ah, i didn't know about the ssh thing. that's weird, they couldn't have done that intentionally
04 16:02:00 Morasique "we will destroy one switch per day until our demands are met"
04 16:02:00 andy753421 Morasique: I wouldn't be supprised if they did that on purpose
04 16:02:00 TheRoot hey guys, unrelated question: is there any open source tax software?
04 16:03:00 andy753421 you used to be able to use public key to get into svn.cs.rose-hulman.edu and access (read only) everyone's repos, but they fixed that
04 16:03:00 andy753421 TheRoot: as of last tax season, no
04 16:03:00 andy753421 TheRoot: there's a couple, but they're unsupported and terrible
04 16:03:00 TheRoot fair enough.
04 16:04:00 TheRoot I think my stuff's easy enough to do this year pen and ink on my own, but meh.
04 16:04:00 TheRoot we need a simpler taxing algorithm.
04 16:04:00 Morasique andy753421: i remember that, i used to ssh into iroquois with just password login and it worked fine, but they figured it out
04 16:14:00 andy753421 What does a green wire mean?
04 16:14:00 andy753421 There's one sticking out of the bundle of wires that's going into this table, and when I kick the bundle it makes my laptop switch from AC to battery..
04 16:14:00 Morasique :D so, power then?
04 16:15:00 andy753421 no, the green on is cut, so i assume it's something else
04 18:03:00 tommost_laptop There's a tiling plugin for compiz fusion!
04 18:03:00 andy753421 tommost: last i checked, it sucked
04 18:05:00 tommost_laptop sighs
04 18:05:00 tommost_laptop When was that?
04 18:06:00 andy753421 tommost_laptop: a long time ago, basically it was a hotkey that when presses, would rearrange all the windows so that they weren't overlapping
04 18:25:00 tommost_laptop What was the kernel version that was just released?
04 18:26:00 andy753421 2.6.24 (kernel.org)
04 18:26:00 tommost_laptop Hmm. I just got an update for 2.6.22-14.
04 18:28:00 andy753421 tommost_laptop: who knows how ubuntu numbers their kernels, most likely you're not using vanilla kernel anyway, (2.6.22.14 was released last november)
04 18:28:00 tommost_laptop Oh, the whole odd-unstable, even stable thing is going on?
04 18:29:00 andy753421 no, they quit doing that
04 18:29:00 tommost_laptop How often do they release them, then?
04 18:29:00 andy753421 I think 2.6.x release are feature releases, and 2.6.x.y releases are bug fix releases
04 18:29:00 andy753421 a new 2.6.x is supposed to come out every couple months, 2.6.x.y's take a few weeks
04 18:30:00 tommost_laptop That (the first one) is faster than I would have expected.
04 18:31:00 andy753421 yea, it seems to be working out pretty well for them, but lately they've been taking longer, 2.6.24.1 is take a really long time actually
04 18:31:00 tommost_laptop Are you looking forward to a return to RC3-level stability?
04 18:31:00 andy753421 also, there will still be new maintenance releases on 2.6.{22,23}, etc
04 18:33:00 andy753421 yes, yes i am.
04 18:33:00 andy753421 http://kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/ for a timeline of releases
04 18:34:00 andy753421 it slightly pissed me off, the first new release of 2008 was 2.4.36 instead of 2.6 something
04 19:21:00 octavious auchter: you ever listen to Sculptured?
04 20:00:00 andy753421 what's the ubuntu command to modify runlevels?
04 20:01:00 auchter i know how to get into runlevel 0...
04 20:02:00 tommost_laptop Are you trying to get the RT server working?
04 20:26:00 andy753421 kevin is
04 20:37:00 tommost_laptop Yeah, that would be good. I've been waiting to check in my stuff for a while now.
04 21:34:00 rr72 andy753421~ what did I mention?
04 21:36:00 rr72 andy753421~ a superbowl party?
04 21:57:00 tommos1 OMG! KDE let me connect! I love you, KDE, to the extent that a constantly shuddering, overly shiny, and gratuitously animated abomination can be loved. Particularly when it is the source of all of my problems in the first place.
04 21:57:00 tommos1 punches KDE 3.5 repeatedly in the face.
04 22:40:00 andy753421 rr72: hu?
04 22:40:00 rr72 hu?
04 22:41:00 rr72 bah u left
04 23:01:00 povilusr_kaaba http://geekz.co.uk/schneierfacts/facts/top
04 23:05:00 Zeta_RHIT rofl
05 01:34:00 auchter [auchtemm@addiator ~]$ dmesg | grep segfault | wc -l
05 01:34:00 auchter 454
05 01:37:00 auchter octavious: nope, but looking on wiki and seeing Charles Ives (an excellent composer, one who i've been listening to recently) mentioned gives me hope...
05 01:38:00 andy753421 auchter: well, if we're going for giant strings of commands ;)
05 01:38:00 andy753421 dmesg | sed -n 's/(.*)[[0-9]*]: segfault.*/1/p' | sort | uniq -c | sort -rg
05 01:39:00 andy753421 oh, actually cut is much nicer than sed for that
05 01:40:00 andy753421 but yea, apparently mkdir is giving a lot of people a hard time
05 02:11:00 auchter so version control is an awesome thing when it's used
05 02:11:00 auchter when it's not, not so much, haha
05 02:15:00 andy753421 auchter: eh?
05 02:15:00 auchter it was more of a joke directed towards Blazeix
05 02:16:00 Morasique they should just change rm so everytime you try to delete something it asks you if you're sure first ;)
05 02:18:00 auchter nah, but if only there was a way to revert back to a previous version of the file that was deleted...
05 02:18:00 andy753421 auchter: on what filesystem?
05 02:18:00 auchter not sure, from what i heard it was fat32
05 02:20:00 andy753421 ah, you can undelete things in ext2, but i guess that doesn't do you much good
05 02:21:00 auchter yeah, small problem
05 02:23:00 andy753421 if you know a few strings from the code, you could always grep the device for it..
05 02:24:00 auchter meh, at least we have a semi-working binary
05 02:26:00 Blazeix auchter: I'm working on recovering it right now
05 02:26:00 Blazeix I've basically got it all
05 02:26:00 auchter ah, awesome news indeed
05 02:26:00 Blazeix I ran the strings command on my fat32 partition /dev/sda4
05 02:26:00 Blazeix piped all the output to a file, and grepped through it till i found everything.
05 02:27:00 auchter haha, cool. just in case you couldn't tell, i was joking back there. i'm really at a state of apathy about this project
05 02:28:00 Blazeix yeah, Vanderford and I just had this 'oh shit' moment when we looked at what I had just typed.
05 02:28:00 auchter was it the tab-completion? i've done that several times before
05 02:29:00 Blazeix i'm not exactly sure what it was
05 02:30:00 Blazeix We were creating our own floppy images to better test rmdir, and we had some temp files we were removing
05 02:30:00 Morasique you used to be able to do a thing in DOS 6 where you could cat a file by doing "echo < filename", it was a weird syntax, and one time i messed it up and did "echo > filename", which outputted the empty echo into my file and destroyed the rest of it. i was pretty unhappy with myself.
05 02:31:00 auchter Morasique: you can do the same thing with cat: cat < filename
05 02:31:00 auchter with the same ill side effect, haha
05 02:39:00 Morasique so you can. i never tried that under linux before
05 02:47:00 Blazeix auchter: I've committed the source version of rmdir, with an update Makefile.
05 02:47:00 Blazeix its basically the same as the binary one, but with no ugly debug output.
05 02:48:00 auchter excellent. it's nice that fat is such an easy filesystem to read
05 02:52:00 Blazeix Its also good that the partition it was on was only 5 gigs, so it was manageable to search through it.
05 03:10:00 auchter http://ptrace.fefe.de/wtfm.jpg
05 03:17:00 andy753421 auchter: I think they got their labels reversed ;)
05 03:19:00 auchter indeed. the code i wrote for os is most definitely an example of "good code", since it uses gotos.
05 03:19:00 auchter which, for some reason, everybody hates.
05 03:25:00 auchter i count no less than 46274 occurences of goto in the linux source
05 03:27:00 andy753421 auchter: longjmp(3) is fun too
05 03:28:00 auchter RETURN VALUE: These functions never return.
05 03:28:00 auchter there's just something ominous about that statement...
05 04:47:00 Morasique does anybody know if imagemagick's import can take an argument that tells it to capture the current window automatically? i want something i can bind to alt+printscreen. if i just do import <filename> i can click the window to capture it, but i want something that will capture it without the click, if that's possible
05 04:58:00 andy753421 um, if you can figure out the window id you can pass it in with -window
05 05:10:00 andy753421 import -window $(xdpyinfo | awk '/^focus/ {print $3}') /tmp/test.png
05 09:10:00 auchter IAIT: One of the DFS front end servers is allowing public key logins. I will continue to work on the second server and update the ticket when it is available.
05 09:11:00 auchter only took them 3 months to respond to my ticket, but it's at least progress.
05 19:30:00 auchter andy753421: reflectance.cs?
05 19:31:00 andy753421 auchter: ?
05 19:31:00 auchter the hostname you connected from, i don't recall ever seeing it before
05 19:31:00 andy753421 hu? this is my laptop..
05 19:31:00 andy753421 somehow I seem to have got a cs.rose hostname..
05 19:33:00 auchter do you have a 137.112 ip? i seem to recall occasionally getting a private ip in the lab
05 19:33:00 andy753421 yea, it's 137.112.104.94
05 19:33:00 andy753421 which is the IP assigned to reflectance
05 19:34:00 auchter strange
05 19:34:00 andy753421 I bet reflectance was one of the old SUN machines and it had a static iP
05 19:34:00 andy753421 now that they're gone, maybe I got randomly assigned it's ip?
05 19:34:00 auchter sounds plausible enough
05 19:35:00 andy753421 in other news, I'm /pretty sure/ I don't have a bandwidth cap right now..
05 19:36:00 Morasique try downloading something big enough to notice and check
05 19:36:00 Morasique i would think you would still have one
05 19:36:00 andy753421 well, i'm supposed to have a 56kb bandwidth limit right now, and speakeasy's speed test just clocked it at 4.5mb
05 19:37:00 auchter perhaps since the cs lab is weird bandwidth caps don't take effect there
05 19:37:00 Morasique auchter: that seems like something a cs would've discovered by now
05 19:37:00 auchter and that would explain why lug.phire.org is so slow
05 19:37:00 octavious maybe they have, just kept it secret
05 19:37:00 Morasique when i had a 56kb cap it worked in the lab, i'm not sure what's going on with andy
05 19:37:00 andy753421 Morasique: you forget that this is mike mcleish
05 19:37:00 Morasique :D
05 19:38:00 Morasique i remember sitting in the lab at 1am a few minutes before my cap was going to be gone refreshing over and over again
05 19:38:00 auchter speaking of labs, i'm going to head over there now
05 19:39:00 Morasique what's the presentation going to be this week? is it one of the scripting language ones?
05 19:39:00 auchter i think jon's going to be giving one on python
05 19:39:00 auchter though it was removed from the scripting languages page... i'm not sure why python isn't on there anymore
05 19:39:00 andy753421 auchter: I though we were doing introductions to everything?
05 19:39:00 auchter ah, i stand corrected.
05 19:39:00 auchter we should probably decide what those intros should cover
05 19:40:00 auchter i'll be back on in a bit
05 19:42:00 andy753421 it looks like my speed is back down to slow again..
05 19:42:00 andy753421 maybe it takes them a couple minutes to register when you get a different IP
05 19:42:00 Morasique i'm picturing an alarm going off in iait. "it's that andy, he's hacking the internet! raise defenses!"
05 19:48:00 bolandmg Moodle server's up and visible.
05 19:48:00 bolandmg http://www.prestoopnik.net/moodle
05 19:58:00 Gahnjc Anyone who can help set up compiz in here?
05 20:00:00 Gahnjc I'm in the CS lab behind the red couch if you're near, otherwise email me
05 20:00:00 Gahnjc I could use the help
05 20:00:00 Gahnjc gahnjc@rose-hulman.edu
05 20:30:00 tominabox1 printing in matlab... says i have no printers installed, whats up with that?
05 20:31:00 tominabox1 btw,gutsy 7.10
05 20:32:00 tominabox1 i have printers set up via cups as usual, and they work fine
05 20:33:00 tominabox1 nevermind might have found a solution
05 20:41:00 tominabox1 has anybody had any problems with it?
05 23:24:00 tommost Welcome back, luglog.
05 23:24:00 Morasique i guess we can't talk about password cracking anymore :)
05 23:24:00 andy753421 ok, i need to make an init script for it..
05 23:25:00 tommost Morasique: Your devious plans will have to wait for another storm.
05 23:25:00 Morasique :D
05 23:25:00 tommost ;-)
05 23:47:00 auchter
06 00:51:00 andy753422 so it looks like you get about 5-10 minutes after switching IP addresses before IAIT's bandwidth limit kicks in. it still counts against bandwidth though.
06 00:52:00 tommost So do you just run a script that reacquires an IP address every couple of minutes?
06 00:53:00 andy753422 nah, i think that would break all my TCP connections
06 01:46:00 andy753422 anyone happen to know of a command to cut of the ends of lines of text so that they don't get wrapped by the xterm (or whatever else)
06 15:56:00 rr72 hows the snow coming down?
06 15:58:00 tommost What snow?
06 15:58:00 rr72 no snow there?
06 15:58:00 tommost No, though it was raining earlier.
06 15:58:00 rr72 had a second snow day this yaer, should i say week
06 15:58:00 rr72 last friday we got off
06 15:59:00 rr72 wonders of living in the midwest
06 15:59:00 tommost I'm from Wisconsin, myself. ;-)
06 15:59:00 rr72 ah, i am sure lots more snow
06 15:59:00 rr72 is from chicagoland area
06 15:59:00 rr72 NW burbs
06 15:59:00 rr72 chicagoland area is the largest metropolitian area i believe
06 16:00:00 rr72 goes from IN to WI
06 16:00:00 rr72 including IN and WI (parts)
06 16:00:00 tommost I'd guess so. Personally, I'd include Milwaukee as a part of Chicago.
06 16:01:00 rr72 idk i looked it up on wikipedia one day
06 16:01:00 rr72 idk why though
06 16:01:00 rr72 and it said parts of IN and parts of WI
06 16:02:00 rr72 shovoled back and walkway and side and half of drive, got too bored so came in for like 20 mins then mom got home and she wanted to snowblow so i started it up, some POS older then me machine
06 16:02:00 rr72 you happen to know how to check uptime on a windows machine?
06 16:02:00 rr72 i don't remember when i turned on my pc and want to see when i did
06 16:03:00 rr72 idk if it was last night or this morning
06 16:03:00 tommost IDK.
06 17:39:00 tommost This is bad. I made a desktop icon for Maple, and the icon I used is so pretty that I'm tempted to click it.
06 18:06:00 auchter icons are perhaps the worst design idea ever conceived
06 18:06:00 tommost The worst? I'd have to give that honor to notification bubbles as implemented in Windows.
06 18:07:00 auchter i don't know, dbus strikes me as a horrible idea as well
06 18:08:00 tommost I've been bitten by that one. Part of my computer's recent weirdness has been the occasionaly failure on login of DBus... which leaves me with default settings for most of Gnome.
06 18:09:00 auchter indeed. i just don't see a need for it...
06 18:09:00 tommost Well, auto-apply is really neat.
06 18:09:00 auchter for my notifications, i write to ~/.info and it shows up in the upper right of my screen
06 18:10:00 tommost That sounds reasonably unobtrusive.
06 18:10:00 auchter it really is, much easier than using some crazy client/server program
06 18:11:00 tommost What does DBus have to do with notifications?
06 18:11:00 tommost I don't mind the whole idea of notification bubbles--they're good in situations like "YOUR BATTERY IS GOING TO DIE NOW YOU IDIOT". But Windows pops them up for every single thing that it possibly could.
06 18:12:00 auchter ah, i see. yeah, i use windows a few hours a week now and find it dreadful
06 18:12:00 auchter (operating systems class requires dyknow, and requires that you run linux. good job.)
06 18:12:00 Morasique i like notifications as long as they don't stay open until i close them, i use notify-send to popup gnome alerts at the bottom right of my screen that just timeout
06 18:13:00 tommost Yeah, one of my favorite little touches is how some of the power notifications in Gnome have a little pie-icon that gets smaller, indicating how much longer the message is going to be open.
06 18:13:00 tommost It solves the whole issue of "am I going to have to click that damn thing?"
06 18:16:00 auchter i'm just glad i don't have to deal with that issue at all
06 18:20:00 andy753421 I think I like the 'idea' of DBus, but it's just really badly implemented
06 18:20:00 tommost How, in particular?
06 18:21:00 andy753421 how is it good, or bad?
06 18:21:00 tommost I was thinking bad, but both would be interesting.
06 18:22:00 andy753421 well, i like that it lets different processes communicate with each other and that lets you use a variety of programming languages
06 18:23:00 andy753421 but it seems really complicated in how it works
06 18:23:00 andy753421 and i don't see the need for having a daemon always running
06 18:24:00 tommost How else? FS support?
06 18:24:00 Joseph_Preston does anyone know how to fix suspend and hibernate in ubuntu gutsy on the junior laptops?
06 18:25:00 tommost Joseph_Preston: I don't think that anyone's been able to do it.
06 18:25:00 andy753421 shared memory, a virtual fs, named pipes, etc
06 18:25:00 tommost I've tried and failed on the Freshman model.
06 19:41:00 bolandmg I think most of the suspend problems come from the ATi drivers, at least on the sophomore/freshman model
06 19:41:00 bolandmg supposedly that is fixed in the newest release of the ATi drivers
06 19:41:00 auchter bolandmg: no, there are much deeper problems than that
06 19:41:00 auchter suspend is completely borked, though hibernate works fine
06 19:41:00 bolandmg okay, I'd never really investigated it
06 19:42:00 tommost I never could get hibernate to work.
06 19:42:00 auchter i had it working just fine last year using suspend2
06 19:42:00 tommost Would being on the freshman model make a difference?
06 19:42:00 auchter probably not, the hardware's essentially identical
06 19:42:00 auchter well, at least the parts that would matter
06 19:48:00 andy753421 So I'm trying to figure out what's up with IAIT's download policies
06 19:48:00 andy753421 unless I'm doing math wrong, rose should have enough bandwidth for everyone on campus to download/upload 181 GB per day..
06 19:49:00 tommost Are you accounting for overhead?
06 19:49:00 andy753421 tommost: overhead?
06 19:49:00 andy753421 you mean like TCP headers?
06 19:50:00 tommost Yes.
06 19:50:00 andy753421 that number includes all that
06 19:50:00 tommost OH.
06 19:51:00 Morasique i suck at math or something, but i'm getting 3.5 gb/person/day, what math are you using?
06 19:52:00 auchter yeah, 181GB seems way too high.
06 19:52:00 andy753421 Morasique: that sounds more correct, i was probably something wrong
06 19:52:00 auchter http://www.rose-hulman.edu/TSC/services/internet_connections/network_statistics/
06 19:52:00 Morasique it's 42 mb/second, so 42*60*60*24=3628800 mb/day, 3628800/1024=3543.75 gb/day, 3543.75/1000 people on campus=3.54 gb/person/day
06 19:52:00 auchter the line is pretty much saturated as far as download goes...
06 19:52:00 Morasique yeah, it's been bad for a while
06 19:53:00 Morasique we have network problems around 4pm every day, where the internet starts to die
06 19:53:00 tommost 42 Mbits == 5 Mbytes
06 19:53:00 auchter yes, i was just about to say that.
06 19:53:00 Morasique ah, that's what i'm doing wrong
06 19:56:00 tommost I see unutilized bandwidth in the modem banks. Maybe once they're saturated, they'll see the need to upgrade to a bigger pipe.
06 19:57:00 andy753421 ah, ok, i needed to add another /1000, makes much more sense now
06 19:58:00 tommost How many people are you figuring?
06 19:58:00 andy753421 ~2500
06 19:59:00 tommost There are fewer than that actually living on campus, though.
06 19:59:00 andy753421 yea, but at least those number are a bit more reasonable ;)
06 20:42:00 kleinjt So solaris takes 20 minutes to boot into an error screen where I get presented with a dialog box of 'qqqqqqqq' and nonfunctional 'yes' and 'no' options.
06 20:43:00 kleinjt With an awesome background of blue with black horizontal stripes
06 20:43:00 tommost Well, at least they got the graphic design right.
06 20:43:00 Morasique pics or it didn't happen
06 20:44:00 kleinjt one moment
06 20:44:00 kleinjt er.. by that, I mean 20 minutes
06 20:45:00 tommost ROFL.
06 20:51:00 auchter kleinjt: did any particular event cause this to happen?
06 20:51:00 kleinjt auchter: perhaps
06 20:51:00 kleinjt I can't find batteries, I'm going to have to bum them (or a camera) off someone.
06 20:52:00 Morasique :D i was kidding about the pictures
06 20:52:00 auchter talking in memes can do that...
06 20:52:00 kleinjt I imagine the long solaris boot times are related to me installing solaris
06 20:52:00 Morasique yeah, but i can't help myself
06 20:52:00 auchter it happens.
06 20:53:00 auchter kleinjt: it does do some crazy hardware configuration on first boot
06 20:53:00 kleinjt It is still booting, it has been 8 minutes...
06 20:53:00 kleinjt ok, now it says could not contact dhcp server, press return to continue
06 20:53:00 kleinjt and now I get the awesome error screen
06 20:54:00 auchter that's pretty weird.
06 20:59:00 tommost Time to play with the camera!
06 21:04:00 kleinjt http://img530.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img0672rb0.jpg <-- pics
06 21:04:00 TheRoot nicely played.
06 21:06:00 auchter so, if you press the down-arrow, do both of the corresponding boxes get highlighted?
06 21:08:00 kleinjt no, it alternates between the two
06 21:08:00 auchter ah, awesome
06 21:08:00 kleinjt those boxes don't show up until I press a down-arrow
06 21:09:00 kleinjt They appear.
06 21:09:00 kleinjt All buttons trigger a system beep, including ctrl-c and ctrl-z
06 21:09:00 kleinjt The only ones that seem to do anything are down and up, which flip between the boxes
06 21:10:00 auchter what about pressing esc-2?
06 21:10:00 auchter you may want to /join #solaris and see what they have to say...
06 21:10:00 kleinjt It redraws the screen as blue with black stripes
06 21:11:00 kleinjt Something about an IP address popped up, I can't enter anything
06 21:11:00 kleinjt anyways, I'd rather complain about it than do anything, I should be studying anyways
06 21:12:00 auchter bah, who studies?
06 21:12:00 TheRoot not me.
06 21:13:00 kleinjt I set the ip to 127.0.0.1 and button mashed, now it says it is configuring parameters
06 21:13:00 auchter ah button mashing. the computer equivalent to hand-waving in real life
06 21:14:00 kleinjt mmmkay, I set the netmask, now I'm asked to say yes or no to a longer string of qs
06 21:16:00 kleinjt mmkay, it is going in loops, I'm shutting it off
06 21:17:00 kleinjt NOTICE: Power Button press 3 times, canceling all requests.
06 21:17:00 auchter in proper engrish, i see.
06 21:17:00 kleinjt er.. pressed, my typo
06 21:23:00 Morasique this is an interesting effect: ls -R | grep ":$" | sed -e 's/:$//' -e 's/[^-][^/]*//--/g' -e 's/^/ /' -e 's/-/|/'
06 21:25:00 TheRoot want to give the english language of that regex for those of us not on linux right at the moment?
06 21:25:00 Morasique you can run it in a folder, it prints out a tree-view of the folder structure
06 21:26:00 TheRoot oh cool I see it now.
06 21:26:00 kleinjt cd / ; ls -R | grep ":$" | sed -e 's/:$//' -e 's/[^-][^/]*//--/g' -e 's/^/ /' -e 's/-/|/' takes awhile
06 21:27:00 TheRoot kleinjt: depending on how long since you reinstalled. :P
06 21:28:00 kleinjt TheRoot: and how many partitions I have mounted :/
06 21:28:00 TheRoot haha. yeah.
06 21:29:00 kleinjt my favorite is cd / ; cd .. ; ls, but nothing cool happens
06 22:16:00 andy753422 Has anyone been able to get to rose's dhcp registration page recently?
06 22:17:00 Morasique :D 403. good job iait
06 22:23:00 Blazeix gahh, I sent out something for a group project in plain text format. One of my group mates just emailed it back to me in docx.
06 22:24:00 Blazeix I'm getting whiplash from the format change
06 22:24:00 auchter redo it in tex and send it to him
06 22:24:00 auchter let's see him .docx that
06 22:26:00 Morasique oh, you can docx it alright, i had to do it for 374. it involves taking your beautifully typeset tex and manually shoving it into word until it looks like somebody took your document down an alley and beat it over and over with a shovel
06 22:26:00 andy753422 you could always send it as a GIF
06 22:27:00 andy753422 seems to be the preffered way to do all campus e-mails these days
06 22:27:00 auchter "Software Architecture and Design"
06 22:27:00 auchter sounds like a business class, so i suppose .docx would be the preferred format...
06 22:27:00 Morasique well, usually steve says to submit a word document, and on the one assignment he forgot, so i pounced on his mistake and submitted a pdf, and he made me convert it
06 22:29:00 Blazeix for the low, low price of $80: http://store.pctexstore.com/tex2word.html
06 22:30:00 Morasique yeah, i'm sure that thing works perfectly
06 22:30:00 Morasique i was tempted to screenshot the pdf and paste it into word, but i didn't think steve would be amused
06 22:30:00 auchter i would have done it, and that's exactly what i'll do if a prof requires i use word
06 22:41:00 bolandmg Wow, that is the best strategy ever. I will also be adopting this.
06 22:42:00 Morasique i thought i found something google had made that converted tex to html, and then you could import that into word, but i can't find it now
06 22:43:00 auchter tex2html is pretty standard
06 22:44:00 auchter it's what mellor uses for all his websites...
06 22:44:00 Morasique oh, cool. i wonder what they were making then
06 23:21:00 bolandmg Beware -- I hunger.
07 00:47:00 auchter so what exactly are we doing tomorrow for the scripting languages intro?
07 00:47:00 tommost I thought that Python was up.
07 00:48:00 auchter i thought so too, but andy mentioned differently the other day
07 00:48:00 tommost andy753421: Do you plan on doing something?#rhlug : 02/07/08 05:48 <andy753421> I may have been wrong, I thought we were doing a little bit of everything
07 00:48:00 andy753421 depends on whether Jon is planning to present tomorrow
07 00:48:00 auchter i thought that too
07 00:50:00 andy753421 anyone know how to contact Jon?
07 00:51:00 auchter perhaps email since he seems to have left this room two hours ago
07 00:51:00 andy753421 auchter: good, you should get right on that
07 00:52:00 auchter done
07 01:10:00 tommost andy753421: You might want to ask about borrowing that rig that we used to calibrate the old cameras again.
07 01:11:00 tommost There's some stuff in OpenCV to do it... there's actually a function called cvFindChessboardCorners.
07 07:32:00 auchter response from jon about the presentation:
07 07:32:00 auchter response from jon about the presentation: I was going to wait until after the scripting language series to give
07 07:32:00 auchter the presentation, so I wouldn't have to give as much background on Python.
07 08:13:00 auchter though jon did say that he could present today, he has the slides done
07 11:35:00 kleinjt who was going to give the presentation today?
07 11:36:00 Morasique kleinjt: last i heard auchter said you could do it, i don't think anyone ever decided for sure, so it's probably you
07 11:36:00 Morasique i doubt anyone else has anything prepared
07 11:37:00 kleinjt ok
07 11:38:00 auchter to be honest, i'm a bit confused as to why python isn't a part of the scripting language presentation set
07 11:39:00 kleinjt I think the person who was going to do python decided not to, so nobody is covering it.
07 11:42:00 bolandmg What topics are we covering today? If it's simple enough I could probably throw together a bit about Python.
07 11:44:00 kleinjt I was going to focus on python's lists. I was going to cover list creation with range and list comprehension, a bit about for loops, enumerate, changing list values, a few of the list methods, stupid list tricks, and lambda and map.
07 11:45:00 kleinjt It might be a bit too much, right now it is about 10 slides.
07 11:46:00 bolandmg That is quite a bit of information.
07 11:50:00 kleinjt I suppose I could get part with the stupid list tricks
07 13:06:00 tommost So do we have a presenter for tonight?
07 13:07:00 Morasique tommost: kleinjt is doing something on python's lists i think
07 13:08:00 Morasique he was talking about it about an hour ago
07 13:08:00 tommost looks at the log.
07 13:14:00 tommost To answer Jon's question: I removed it from the scripting language series because it sounded like he was going to cover most of what I intended to.
07 13:15:00 tommost If he's not doing as general an overview of the language as I thought, I can put it back.
07 13:18:00 tommost Also, there's a missing line break about fifteen lines up in the log.
07 13:19:00 auchter heh, seven days into the month and already at 100k of logs?
07 13:24:00 tommost So have we decided to do the series as days dedicated to individual languages, or as a topic per day?
07 13:25:00 auchter topic per day
07 13:26:00 auchter and i'm wondering if we should have a different presentation next week then start the scripting languages after break
07 16:33:00 tommost I can't contact the new camera...
07 16:33:00 andy753421 yea, me neither
07 16:34:00 tommost It was working just two hours ago.
07 16:34:00 tommost I'm going to go over to Meyers.
07 16:39:00 tommost It was unplugged. Someone also put the lens cap on it.
07 16:42:00 tommost It's on now, though who knows what it's IP address is.
07 16:46:00 tommos1 andy753421: Did you set it to always DHCP, or was it a transitive thing?
07 16:50:00 andy753421 tommost: oh, it would be back to 192.168.0.9 now
07 16:51:00 tommos1 And I can't contact it there... not that that says much, apparently.
07 16:52:00 tommos1 How soon did Kevin say that he would be getting it registered?
07 16:52:00 andy753421 I can't connect from the red machine either
07 16:53:00 tommos1 I just restarted it.
07 16:58:00 andy753421 tommost: he says he just submitted it
07 16:59:00 andy753421 also, i posted a page on the wiki about the ruby, I'm not sure if i'll talk about all of it or not
07 19:01:00 povilusr_kaaba my laptop is soooooo cold
07 19:01:00 povilusr_kaaba also no ops, how will we live
07 19:16:00 povilus-desktop heres my sagga with iait as it stands, if anyone else wants to submit a ticket
07 19:16:00 povilus-desktop I cannot connect to the ipsec vpn because the certificate file is not available. windows xp and xp 64 bit have built in ipsec vpn clients that will connect to the nortel vpn that rose has, but it dows not have the certificate file required.
07 19:16:00 povilus-desktop You may not know about it but you do use a certificate. The Nortel client potentially has it built in. if you would like to read http://csrc.nist.gov/publications/nistpubs/800-77/sp800-77.pdf and get back to me on why you are wrong it would be greatly appreciated.
07 19:17:00 povilus-desktop The following links provides proof Nortel uses the ipsec/l2tp protocol http://products.nortel.com/go/product_assoc.jsp?segId=0&parId=0&rend_id=3817&contOid=100177235&prod_id=34721&locale=en-us
07 19:17:00 povilus-desktop If you cannot support this, can we set up our own vpn that will support those students you refuse to support? I feel confident I can do it in under 2 hours with less than $100 (less than one quarters technology fee). I suggest you purchase one of these fine products from Linksys.
07 19:17:00 povilus-desktop (http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-BEFVP41-EtherFast-Router-4-Port/dp/B00005Y7DQ) If you feel changing your current configuration is to difficult. If you require assistance with setting this product up or require help with changing your current hardware to support this protocol, I can provide assistance for $100 an hour. I have worked for the U.S. government doing this exact kind of work for 3 years.
07 19:26:00 TheRoot I like it.
07 19:26:00 TheRoot I say send it.
07 19:34:00 tommost Some random guy just IMed me on AIM, asking about Django.
07 19:35:00 tommost It's weird.
07 19:35:00 tommost How'd he get my AIM username?
07 19:36:00 andy753421 tommost: google your username
07 19:36:00 tommost Nothing.
07 19:36:00 tommost It's on Facebook. That's the only thing that I can think of.
07 19:36:00 collinj1 andy753421: Did you leave your mouse in the CS lab?
07 19:36:00 andy753421 hm, you could try asking him
07 19:36:00 tommost I did.
07 19:37:00 tommost He just keeps asking me about some issue with the database API.
07 19:38:00 tommost Ah--I figured it out. It's on djangopeople.net.
07 19:39:00 tommost It is there no longer.
07 23:47:00 Morasique andy753421: any idea what's wrong with the user list on the lug wiki? (http://lug.phire.org/index.php/Special:Listusers)
07 23:48:00 andy753421 Morasique: scheme probably broke last time I upgraded mediawiki, i'll take a look at it
07 23:57:00 andy753421 Morasique: fixed
08 02:34:00 andy753421 I just did a pretty big upgrade on lug.phire.org so if anyone notices anything broken, let me know
08 02:36:00 andy753421 also, URLs now look like http://lug.phire.org/wiki/Kerberos instead of http://lug.phire.org/index.php/Kerberos, but it should redirect form the old one to the new one
08 02:48:00 Blazeix I tried accessing the first link you posted, and I got a Forbidden error
08 02:49:00 Blazeix wait, I get that for the entire lug.phire.org website
08 02:49:00 andy753421 fixed
08 02:50:00 andy753421 i somehow managed to link /mw to /mw (mw being the directory where MediaWiki files are stored)
08 02:50:00 Blazeix Looks good, its nice that we'll have more readable URLs
08 10:49:00 auchter has anyone here used truecrypt under linux?
08 12:55:00 povilusr anyone know how to jut compile 1 section of a latex document
08 12:55:00 povilusr ?
08 13:12:00 TheRoot I do not have such knowledge.
08 13:18:00 auchter povilusr: get any responses to your tickets?
08 21:48:00 Blazeix auchter: do you use the ":open <searchengine> <keyword>" in vimperator?
08 22:08:00 tominabox1 question.. anybody got any idea how to reinstall GTK?
08 22:09:00 tominabox1 (sudo apt-get install libgtk2.0-0 --reinstall doesnt work because "gtk cannot be downloaded")
08 22:12:00 Morasique that command works for me
08 22:13:00 tominabox1 weird...
08 22:14:00 tominabox1 Reinstallation of libgtk2.0-0 is not possible, it cannot be downloaded.
08 22:14:00 tominabox1 i have the 7.10 CD on my list of sources
08 22:15:00 tominabox1 and synaptic doesnt work either
08 22:16:00 tominabox1 well on synaptic might work but the problem is I'd probably have to uninstall first... i think
08 22:30:00 Morasique synaptic is just a frontend for apt-get, i don't think it would do anything differently. i'm not sure what would cause that
08 22:30:00 tominabox1 eh i think i found something, but it says its 950 MB...so that would be kind of big
09 01:18:00 auchter Blazeix: well, kind of. that's the ed version of just pressing 'o'
09 01:49:00 Blazeix auchter: have you modified the <searchengine> term at all? the documentation says you can simply edit the specific xml file, but that doesn't seem to work.
09 02:06:00 auchter no, i haven't done that
09 17:26:00 tommost andy753421: I got the hardware team to bolt the camera stand to a board earlier.
09 17:36:00 andy753421 tommost: alright, cool
09 17:50:00 Morasique auchter: i like the bitterness on the sshfs wiki article
09 17:50:00 Morasique "I (and others) have issued support tickets requesting public-key login, but they have not even had the courtesy to respond. Instead they feel content to ignore us."
09 17:58:00 kleinjt auchter: do you remember the command you used to setup a directly connected sun ray?
09 18:12:00 auchter Morasique: yeah, i'll admit to being a bit bitter about that at the time
09 18:12:00 auchter however, they have since responded, saying that they're working on it
09 18:12:00 auchter kleinjt: not off the top of my head, and my solaris server is currently off since the power outage
09 18:13:00 auchter kleinjt: it doesn't like not being shut down properly...
10 00:00:00 tommost This channel is boring me. I demand an argument!
10 00:01:00 tommost Emacs or vi or nano?
10 00:02:00 andy753421 Ruby or Python?
10 00:02:00 tommost more or less?
10 00:03:00 tommost Or most?
10 00:03:00 andy753421 nobody likes mosts
10 00:04:00 tommost C or anything that's not C?
10 00:04:00 andy753421 p or np?
10 00:07:00 tommost I demand amusment! Only Andy's working with me. Where are the rest of you?
10 00:13:00 auchter xml is stupid
10 00:13:00 tommost I agree. JSON is better for many of the things that XML is used for.
10 00:14:00 tommost XML is only good for something like Atom, that needs to be arbitrarily extensible.
10 00:14:00 tommost You want stupid, though, look at XSL.
10 00:15:00 auchter having a fast computer does not justify the use of bloated code with horrible feature creep
10 00:15:00 tommost It wouldn't be half so bad if it just had some decent string-manipulation abilities, but it doesn't, so any XSLT that needs to do that becomes massively unreadable.
10 00:15:00 tommost So much for declarative languages.
10 00:15:00 tommost auchter: Wrong.
10 00:16:00 auchter i don't think so.
10 00:16:00 tommost I do.
10 00:16:00 tommost Well, provisionally.
10 00:16:00 tommost Nothing excuses Chandler.
10 00:16:00 auchter Chandler?
10 00:17:00 tommost OSS calendaring/groupware software written by a bunch of Java programmers in Python. Takes, like, 30 seconds to load.
10 00:17:00 tommost What did they do? Rewrite the JVM in Python?
10 00:19:00 tommost http://www.dreamingincode.com/
10 00:20:00 auchter i see.
10 00:21:00 auchter my brain is fried from struggling with my sliding blocks program right now.
10 00:21:00 tommost It should be.
10 00:21:00 tommost I've been dealing with PHP.
10 00:21:00 auchter on the plus side, i bet it's the only one in my class that i could implement using nothing but logic gates.
10 00:21:00 tommost I don't think that that really counts as a plus.
10 00:22:00 tommost *CSSE* 230.
10 00:22:00 auchter i'm a CPE who likes elegance, what can i say?
10 00:22:00 tommost In that case, I challenge you to implement it with logic gates. On our camera.
10 00:23:00 auchter this would be incredibly well suited to an FPGA, since many of the operations could be done in parallel...
10 00:24:00 tommost Put your code where your mouth is. I want functioning Verilog by Monday.
10 00:24:00 auchter i want functional java by monday.
10 00:24:00 tommost Good luck with that.
10 00:25:00 tommost (You'll need it.)
10 00:25:00 auchter i definitely need it.
10 00:25:00 auchter bloody horrible language.
10 00:25:00 tommost Frankly, it rather surprises me that Java even has bitwise operators. I'd expect them to be method calls.
10 00:25:00 auchter they are when you're using BigInteger...
10 00:26:00 tommost LOL.
10 00:26:00 auchter a.shiftLeft(3);
10 00:26:00 auchter horrible notation.
10 00:26:00 tommost I recommend that you write a Perl script that generates Java code from something readable.
10 00:33:00 auchter actually i might do it in reverse, because once i get this working i might convert it to use longs instead of BigIntegers for boards with <64 spaces
10 00:33:00 auchter since i have a feeling that BigInteger is horribly slow.
10 00:33:00 tommost I'm sure it is for bitwise operations.
10 00:34:00 auchter which is all i'm doing...
10 00:35:00 auchter hmm, i'm all out of dates. i suppose that means i should go shopping now.
10 00:35:00 auchter be back in a bit.
10 00:35:00 tommost Dates are delicious.
10 01:08:00 auchter indeed they are, and now i have some
10 01:08:00 tommost Congratulations.
10 17:15:00 Blazeix Has everyone seen this? http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/02/10/2011257&from=rss
10 17:16:00 Blazeix I compiled the code given, and *bam* instant root
10 17:16:00 auchter yeah, i saw that but haven't had the chance to try it
10 17:17:00 auchter [auchtemm@addiator ~]$ uname -r
10 17:17:00 auchter 2.6.9-67.0.1.ELsmp
10 17:18:00 Morasique auchter: :D we tried that too
10 17:18:00 Morasique we have another server in the cs lab though, and it worked on that one
10 17:18:00 auchter luckily none of us are maliciuos
10 17:19:00 Blazeix I accidentally compiled it without "-static -Wno-format", and it locked up my computer so badly I had to take the battery out to shut it down
10 17:20:00 auchter haha, wow.
10 17:20:00 auchter looking through the code hurts my head trying to understand it
10 17:20:00 Morasique yeah, i have no idea what it's doing, that's why i didn't try it initially, i waited till blazeix helpfully tested it on his machine
10 17:21:00 Blazeix what's the worst that could happen?
10 17:21:00 Blazeix Its not like my Dell computer would explode or anything
10 17:21:00 Morasique well, it could freeze your computer so badly you have to take the battery out to shut it down
10 17:21:00 Morasique hypothetically
10 17:22:00 auchter it could also decide that your filesystems might be fun to corrupt
10 17:23:00 Morasique i bet iait knew about this and that's why they don't update their servers. it turns out they're smart after all
10 17:23:00 Morasique .....
10 17:24:00 auchter "smart", heh
10 17:24:00 auchter speaking of which, i wonder if sam got a response from them yet...
10 17:54:00 tommost I got a response: "32-bit Windows XP is the supported configuration."
10 17:54:00 tommost My response was "This is not a solution."
10 18:01:00 auchter did you marquee and blink it? haha
10 18:01:00 tommost I considered it.
10 18:02:00 tommost But I have another ticket with an outcome that depends on the good will of whoever is doing the web server upgrades.
10 18:02:00 tommost So I don't want to piss them off.
10 18:03:00 auchter yeah, probably for the best
10 18:04:00 tommost I'm really tempted to submit a ticket that is nothing but "<script>alert("Parature is vulnerable to XSS."); alert("I haz ur cookiez:n" + document.cookie);</script>
10 18:04:00 Morasique :D
10 18:05:00 auchter i doubt they'd really care. but if they did, they'd probably care a lot
10 18:07:00 tommost They should care. We could totally set stuff up so that Sam's ticket is constantly at the top of the queue, blinking wildly.
10 20:53:00 Joseph_Preston if anyone is interested i found out how to fix suspend and hibernate in ubuntu on the junior laptops
10 20:54:00 tommost displays intense interest.
10 20:55:00 Blazeix joseph_preston: how?
10 20:55:00 Joseph_Preston in /etc/default/acpi-support change line 29 from POST_VIDEO=true to POST_VIDEO=
10 20:56:00 Joseph_Preston that fixed it for me
10 20:56:00 tommost Would you put this on the wiki Ubuntu FAQ page?
10 20:56:00 andy753421 or http://lug.phire.org/wiki/Precision_M70_Power_Management
10 20:56:00 Morasique switching that to false seems to fix it for a lot of laptops, according to the internet
10 21:23:00 Joseph_Preston has anyone tested that hibernate fix on the underclassmen laptops?
10 21:23:00 tommost I'll do it later. Right now I'm using my machine.
10 21:24:00 Joseph_Preston alright let me know the results
10 22:30:00 tommost Is there a way to terminate an SSH login session such that an X-forwarded application remains running and can be brought back to the foreground later?
10 22:35:00 andy753421 tommost: screen
10 22:35:00 andy753421 or do you want to attach the x client to a different x server?
10 22:39:00 octavious tommost: vnc is pretty much your option
10 22:42:00 andy753421 there was a google SoC project a year or two ago that was trying to do something like that
10 22:42:00 tommost If figured that that was what I would end up doing.
10 22:43:00 tommost *I
10 22:48:00 Morasique tommost: cryopid might be able to help, it lets you save running programs and relaunch them later
10 22:48:00 octavious from what i heard a project like that would be difficult to implement because of all of X's crazy legacy stuff.
10 22:54:00 auchter Morasique: cryopid sounds crazy
10 22:55:00 Morasique auchter: i only messed with it for a few minutes once, and it didn't seem to work well with what i tried, but i'm told it works well for most people
10 22:56:00 tommost That wouldn't work too well for network programs, though.
10 22:56:00 tommost Not to mention something running under Wine...
10 22:57:00 auchter tommost: some of the examples it gives is for network programs (irssi, mutt)
10 22:57:00 auchter apparently it works fine for that
10 22:57:00 tommost Strange. Wouldn't the connection break on the other end?
10 22:58:00 auchter yes, but if you reconnect it should work fine
10 23:02:00 tommost Well, it produced a lot of nice gibberish on my terminal.
10 23:04:00 tommost This is taking a long time.
10 23:05:00 Morasique tommost: it probably isn't working, it tended to just freeze my terminals when i tried
10 23:06:00 tommost After it paused for a while it produced more output. I'll let it sit. I have all night.
10 23:25:00 auchter andy753421: i was giving some thought to what you said about having the i2c devices act as 9p clients as opposed to servers
10 23:25:00 auchter conceptual issues aside, i don't think it would work very well due to the nature of the i2c bus
10 23:27:00 tommost It finished! "Compressed -1590400602 bytes into 20020285 bytes (101% compression)"
10 23:29:00 tommost And it dumped core when I tried to run it.
10 23:30:00 tommost And it never stopped running (?!)
10 23:30:00 andy753421 auchter: alright, that's fine
10 23:45:00 andy753421 anyone know of anything that will display messages that would normally go in the 'notification area' of gnome panel or the like?
10 23:48:00 auchter http://www.dimax.com.ua/pciex/dmx10.shtml
10 23:55:00 Morasiqu1 i think you're looking for notify-send
10 23:56:00 andy753421 Morasiqu1: that's apparently half o it
10 23:56:00 andy753421 i was looking for /usr/libexec/notification-daemon as well, but preferable something non-gnome
10 23:56:00 Morasiqu1 what do you mean?
10 23:56:00 Morasiqu1 ah
10 23:57:00 Morasiqu1 i think notify-send using notification-daemon, but i don't really know
10 23:57:00 Morasiqu1 s/using/uses/
10 23:57:00 andy753421 seems notification-daemon listens on a dbus thingey, and notify-send writes to it
11 00:13:00 andy753421 auchter: I think you were asking about a something to indent latex code a while back
11 00:13:00 andy753421 there's a vim thing that I was thinking of that does that is called latexsuite
11 00:34:00 auchter andy753421: yes, i use latexsuite, however for latex that was horribly formatted in the first place it doesn't help
11 00:35:00 andy753421 auchter: try gg=G
11 00:36:00 andy753421 auchter: that should auto-indent everything in the file
11 00:36:00 andy753421 also, you can use gq to word wrap paragraphs and such (gqap to word wrap 'a paragraph')
11 00:43:00 auchter ah, that's pretty cool
11 00:43:00 auchter i'll have to give that a try next time i encounter it
11 00:45:00 andy753421 yea, it took me a really long time to realize that that command existed (if you didn't notice, it will work on anything (c,java, html, etc) as well)
11 00:45:00 auchter i really need to read up on vim, i had no idea it did that
11 00:45:00 andy753421 :help holy-grail
11 01:54:00 Blazeix OdfConverter 1.1 came out a while ago, and broke the script on our wiki that automatically installs it.
11 01:55:00 Blazeix They require you to create an account before downloading it now, so I got rid of the script and updated the instructions
11 01:55:00 Blazeix The instructions work on my distro, and the instructions are a bit different for Ubuntu. If someone who has ubuntu could test them out, that'd be nice.
11 01:57:00 auchter perhaps we could create a shared lug account for that page and post the username/password
11 01:57:00 auchter actually, 12345/12345 works.
11 01:58:00 Blazeix ha, cool
11 01:58:00 Blazeix the new version supports xslx and pptx
11 02:00:00 Morasiqu1 i thought it always supported those, i've been able to open them
11 02:15:00 andy753421 I'm completely confused by whether the M70's have PATA (IDE) disk controllers or SATA controllers
11 02:16:00 andy753421 someone with windows still installed should look though the hardware manager (or whatever it's called) and let me know what that says
11 02:34:00 andy753421 so it looks like the CD drive is a native pata controller, but the hard disk has a sata controller with a sata->pata bridge before getting to the pata hard disk
11 02:34:00 andy753421 (maybe)
11 02:37:00 Zeta_RHIT well, the hdds are hooked in via a physical pata interface
11 02:37:00 andy753421 yep
11 02:37:00 Zeta_RHIT other than that, yeah... it's really freaking strange
11 02:42:00 Zeta_RHIT the other thing is, I never knew pata was hot-swap...
11 02:42:00 Zeta_RHIT How does that work for the cd drive then?
11 02:42:00 Zeta_RHIT Do laptop cd drives have a special version of pata?
11 02:42:00 andy753421 Zeta_RHIT: well, i think you can hot-swap anything, it's just a bad idea sometimes
11 02:43:00 andy753421 I used to hot-swap a old IDE hard disk for a while and it worked just fine, apparently i was running the risk of shorting something out, but I never had any problems
11 02:47:00 Zeta_RHIT heh
11 02:56:00 Zeta_RHIT I "hot swapped" an IDE drive on an 8086 board a long time ago
11 02:56:00 Zeta_RHIT set the cable on fire :)
11 02:57:00 Zeta_RHIT it was fun
11 03:01:00 Zeta_RHIT on a related note, those smell horrible when burnt :)
11 03:01:00 Zeta_RHIT drive survived too
11 03:02:00 Zeta_RHIT indestructible 100MB drives ftw
11 09:56:00 andy753421 p
11 10:02:00 auchter q
11 11:04:00 auchter bloody ridiculous
11 11:10:00 auchter anyone else tempted to write a letter asking for the httpd logs from february 4th be released?
11 11:11:00 andy753421 why?
11 11:11:00 auchter didn't get the email?
11 11:12:00 andy753421 auchter: i don't think giving away data because of a data leak is a good idea
11 11:13:00 auchter the logs aren't likely to contain any identifying data, except for the number of people who accessed the data as well as the time span
11 11:14:00 andy753421 auchter: at rose, ip addresses tend to be pretty identifiable
11 11:15:00 auchter point taken, though i'd argue that the non-rose ips would be more important to see
11 12:03:00 Morasique wow. did everyone notice the link in that privacy alert e-mail?
11 12:04:00 Morasique the last one purporting to go to http://www.rose-hulman.edu/disclosurefaq actually linked to http://www.xxxxxxxx, which if your browser corrects by adding a .com at the end is a porn site
11 12:04:00 Morasique so i'm glad that our president is sending me porn
11 12:09:00 auchter Morasique: haha, i noticed the link but didn't actually click on it.
11 12:26:00 povilusr_kaaba so i am no longer allowed to submit tickets to iait about the vpn
11 12:26:00 povilusr_kaaba says erik hayez
11 12:26:00 povilusr_kaaba i am allowed to use anyother method, including hayz hims self is going to hlp out
11 12:28:00 Morasique :D you should send me the e-mail
11 12:28:00 povilusr_kaaba we talked to him
11 12:28:00 povilusr_kaaba no email
11 12:28:00 Morasique we?
11 12:29:00 povilusr_kaaba mark and it
11 12:29:00 povilusr_kaaba mark was also banned
11 12:29:00 povilusr_kaaba mark and i*
11 12:29:00 Morasique what did mark do? i thought all his tickets were normal
11 12:29:00 andy753421 were they angry about <blink> or something?
11 12:29:00 povilusr_kaaba nooo idea
11 12:29:00 povilusr_kaaba hayes thought the sweater one was funny
11 12:30:00 povilusr_kaaba still dient like it but he did find it funny
11 12:30:00 Morasique poor iait
11 12:30:00 andy753421 heh i didn't realize you actually sent that one
11 12:31:00 povilusr_kaaba i dident and still dont care what iait thinks of me
11 12:32:00 Zeta_RHIT I really wish I could see this guy's face when hayes emails him back
11 12:32:00 Zeta_RHIT And tells him he's basically an idiot obstructing legitimate academic work
11 12:33:00 Morasique we should've bribed hayes to reply with "he's got a point, can i get a sweater for my machine too?"
11 12:33:00 Zeta_RHIT ROFL
11 12:33:00 povilus-desktop that would have been ausome
11 12:58:00 Morasique evolution claims i have 4294967294 unread messages in my inbox
11 13:00:00 andy753421 -2?
11 13:01:00 auchter you've read more messages than you've received apparently
11 13:01:00 auchter 2's complement ftw
11 13:03:00 andy753421 maybe it integer underflowed
11 13:03:00 Morasique alternatively, it's possible we get so much all-campus mail now that i actually got 4294967294 e-mails in the last 10 minutes
11 13:03:00 Morasique iait is helping with my hourly "mailbox full" message
11 13:03:00 auchter next time they do that, i'm setting up a filter to forward it back to them.
11 13:04:00 auchter 1 message is helpful, 24/day is not.
11 14:18:00 andy753421 auchter: so i figured out a project for the lug to work on :)
11 14:20:00 andy753421 auchter: write a mail client that connects to IMAP and/or exchange and serves mail over 9p
11 15:49:00 auchter andy753421: upasfs(4)
11 15:59:00 andy753421 auchter: interesting, but not exactly what I was looking for
11 15:59:00 auchter oh?
11 16:00:00 andy753421 I was hoping for something that would pull in messages from imap, and store them locally
11 16:03:00 auchter any reason why?
11 16:04:00 andy753421 I would like to have all my messages stored on my own server so I don't have to worry about size limits, etc
11 16:04:00 andy753421 and so I could store the messages from rose and all my other email accounts in the same place
11 16:05:00 auchter ah, that makes sense
11 16:06:00 auchter it seems like most of the hard stuff is already done by upas
11 16:08:00 andy753421 yea, you could probably reuse the imap/pop code for fetching, and then use mbox as the datastore (or implement support for maildir)
11 16:09:00 andy753421 also, how does plummer work over
11 16:09:00 andy753421 *plumber work over network connection?
11 16:10:00 andy753421 actually, i need to spend some time reading about how file servers generally work over networks and all that
11 16:10:00 auchter i would imagine that you would import wherever plumber is mounted
11 16:10:00 andy753421 maybe
11 16:12:00 auchter hopefully by the end of break i'll have a 9p server written for the pic that we're going to be using
11 16:13:00 andy753421 so if I was running upasfs on my server, would it generate plumb requests to plumber on my server or to plumber on my laptop (where it would be mounted)?
11 16:16:00 auchter i would think it wuold go to your laptop, unless you import the plumber mount from your server, but this is way over my head
11 16:17:00 andy753421 that would make sense, but I don't know how it would do that, because the server process wouldn't actually be running on my laptop so I don't know how it would communicate with my plumber
11 16:17:00 andy753421 i think this might be a job for #plan9 ;)
11 16:18:00 auchter yeah, probably
11 16:18:00 auchter i'll observe
11 16:19:00 andy753421 heh, ok
11 16:19:00 andy753421 i'm reading plumber(4) first
11 16:19:00 auchter i'm tempted to go to the candidate talk, as someone is trying to convince me there would be free food there...
11 16:20:00 andy753421 there might not be, i don't know
11 16:21:00 auchter there seems to be some applications to robotics, so i suppose it's worth seeing
11 16:21:00 andy753421 maybe
11 16:22:00 andy753421 i think i'll ask later once this presentation is over
11 19:14:00 octavious so anyone wondering whether that leak of information was that link andy posted from the dining services?
11 19:15:00 octavious the one he posted awhile back
11 19:15:00 tommost It didn't have social security numbers in it.
11 19:18:00 tommost Did anyone ever chew out Aramark for that, though?
11 19:19:00 octavious not sure, i was hoping that andy was on, but i guess he is not
11 19:20:00 tommost Someone on that list should reply to Dr. J's e-mail with the Aramark link.
11 20:06:00 andy753421 so it looks like the problems I've been having in the 2.6.24 kernel with the b43 drivers are actually being caused by nvidia and/or X breaking alsa, which in turn breaks b43.. I'm still not quite sure what exactly is going on though..
11 21:53:00 Morasique does anyone know how to set it up so i can run a script automatically before/after a print job?
11 21:54:00 andy753421 Morasique: er, what script? (if you're using lp/lpr, you could alias it.. but I doubt that's what you're using)
11 21:57:00 Morasique right now when I print to PDF using CUPS it saves it in ~/PDF, so i wanted to script it so it could ask where I want the file to go and move it after it's done printing
11 22:00:00 andy753421 ah, I don't know. Not that it answers your question, but most programs have a built in print-to-file or export-to-pdf, what are you using?
11 22:02:00 Morasique it's not any specific program, i just wanted it in general for my CUPS PDF printer
11 22:51:00 collinjc Morasique: This doesn't exactly answer your question, but apparently you can change the destination directory by editing /etc/cups/cups-pdf.conf. You can change the line that says Out ${HOME}/PDF to wherever you want it to go. It still goes to the same place each time you print, but if you change that to your desktop, for example, it is a little easier to find.
11 23:20:00 andy753421 Morasique: set PostProcessing in cups-pdf.conf to:
11 23:20:00 andy753421 sh -c 'mv "$1" $(DISPLAY=:0.0 zenity --file-selection --save --filename="$1")' --
11 23:21:00 Morasique andy753421: oh, PostProcessing, cool. thanks
11 23:21:00 Morasique have you been working on that the whole time?
11 23:22:00 andy753421 DISPLAY=:0.0 is a bit hackish, because it won't work unless you're running X on :0.. you can write a script to do things better if you like
11 23:22:00 andy753421 Morasique: nah, i was finishing my paper for japanese society
11 23:22:00 andy753421 i found that option pretty quick, but then it took me about 20 minutes to figure out how to set it up ;)
11 23:23:00 andy753421 I had been using 'PostProcessing /usr/local/bin/script # some stuff I commented out'
11 23:25:00 andy753421 and the '# stuff..' wasn't getting commented out, so I couldn't figure out why the script wasn't getting any arguments passed to it
11 23:41:00 Morasique any idea why it would be ignoring my PostProcessor line?
11 23:41:00 Morasique i have it pointing to a script that just touches an empty file, and it's not doing it
11 23:42:00 andy753421 set debug to 4 and then take a look at /var/log/cups/cups-pdf_log
11 23:43:00 andy753421 if you're running cups as a non-root user that will cause a problem
11 23:43:00 andy753421 not sure if that's it though..
11 23:44:00 Morasique hmm. i got "sh: /home/mrozekma/pdfprint: Permission denied". it's set to world-executable
11 23:46:00 andy753421 Morasique: the mount has exec permission right?
11 23:46:00 andy753421 can you run it from the command line?
11 23:47:00 Morasique i can run pdfprint from the command line, yeah. i'm not sure what you mean by the first part
11 23:48:00 andy753421 you can mount filesystems without exec permission so even if the user sets +x they can actually run the files
11 23:49:00 Morasique ah. i think it's mounted normally, i haven't done anything to it
11 23:50:00 andy753421 try running setting the PostProcess command to something like 'whoami > /tmp/cups-pdf.log' (no quotes)
11 23:53:00 Morasique :D whoami: permission denied
11 23:58:00 andy753421 Morasique: are you running selinux/apparmor or something?
11 23:58:00 Morasique no
11 23:59:00 Morasique i can mess with it later and let you know if i figure it out, i didn't think it would be so difficult
12 00:00:00 andy753421 alright
12 00:24:00 Joseph_Preston has anyone tried the ubuntu hibernate fix on an underclassmen laptop?
12 00:26:00 tommost I did.
12 00:26:00 tommost Didn't work.
12 00:26:00 tommost I also did some fiddling around with other settings in that config file.
12 00:26:00 tommost I did get it to a point where when I told it to sleep it would turn off the screen.
12 00:27:00 tommost But it seemed to loose all sense of what was necessary so far as cooling--the fan immediately came on at full whirl.
12 00:27:00 tommost Like an engine.
12 00:27:00 Morasique i tried it on the junior laptop and it just locks my computer when i try to hibernate, but i didn't really mess with it since i never use hibernate anyway
12 11:59:00 Morasique andy753421: you were right yesterday, it turns out i do have apparmor, apparently it comes with gutsy and i didn't realize it
12 12:00:00 Morasique and the only default profile is on the cups daemon :)
12 19:57:00 tommost Robotics meeting now, people. Team picture!
12 19:57:00 andy753421 er, i'll be there soon
12 21:25:00 auchter so we should write a letter to IAIT condemning the use of proprietary protocols
12 21:32:00 octavious i agree
12 21:39:00 auchter i'm thinking actually two letters: one more technically oriented, and one dumbed-down one
13 15:34:00 auchter andy753421: now that the computer for robotics is ordered, have you decided on a distro?
13 15:57:00 andy753421 haven't thought about it to much
13 15:57:00 andy753421 I'm partial to slackware.. but we'll have to decide
13 15:57:00 auchter that's what i was going to say as well
13 16:36:00 octavious i like vimperator 0.6 quickhints mode
13 16:40:00 auchter octavious: how is it different?
13 16:41:00 octavious well one thing it does is highlights all the links
13 16:41:00 octavious and as you type in part of the link it narrows it down until there is 1 link left
13 16:41:00 octavious or you can just type the number of the link
13 16:41:00 auchter hm, i'm going to have to give that a try
13 16:46:00 octavious it is much quicker as well
13 16:47:00 auchter what i desire most is support for regular expressions in the search
13 16:49:00 octavious i think there has been talk of that on the mailing list
13 18:19:00 tommost Erik Hayes always makes me sad. :-(
13 18:20:00 auchter why's that?
13 18:20:00 Morasique the printer thing?
13 18:20:00 tommost Every time he says something that applies to me, it's bad. My roommate. The printer thing.
13 18:21:00 auchter so i've not heard about the printer thing as it relates to hayes
13 18:21:00 tommost He sent out an all-campus e-mail telling people not to mess with the printers. Apparently there is an "understanding with IAIT" or something.
13 18:22:00 auchter ah, it must have been all-reshalls, since i didn't get that
13 18:22:00 Morasique "Somebody has been changing the text on resident hall printer displays to inappropriate comments. We have an agreement with IAIT worked out so that you (the students) and the resident assistants have the privilege of being able to do more than just basic interactions with the printers. IAIT certainly has the ability to "lock down" the printers so that the only thing students will be able to do is print to them. I fully believe it is in your best inte
13 18:22:00 Morasique it was reshalls
13 18:22:00 tommost Well, at least IAIT people didn't get it, then.
13 18:23:00 tommost I suppose that's good.
13 18:23:00 auchter they read your email for fun, though
13 18:23:00 tommost But it's still annoying--why does he care if I make the Speed printer sing jingle bells?
13 18:23:00 Morasique i wouldn't be surprised
13 18:23:00 tommost Yeah.
13 18:23:00 tommost I need to get GPG working...
13 18:23:00 Zeta_RHIT rofl
13 18:23:00 auchter it's not hard, i can help you thursday if you need it
13 18:24:00 Zeta_RHIT do they actually have a speaker capable of that?
13 18:24:00 auchter i desperately want more people to use it, eventually the entire campus.
13 18:24:00 tommost No, I just scrolled it across the display.
13 18:24:00 Zeta_RHIT ah, okay
13 18:24:00 Zeta_RHIT still awesome though
13 18:24:00 tommost It was mainly random things like that.
13 18:24:00 Zeta_RHIT Do they have any printers that support postscript at all?
13 18:25:00 tommost All of them do, I think.
13 18:25:00 Zeta_RHIT I dunno... cadence ncsim never liked them
13 18:25:00 Zeta_RHIT I think I recall annoying problems with that
13 18:25:00 tommost Yeah. That's actually what prompted me to mess with the printer.
13 18:25:00 Zeta_RHIT rofl
13 18:25:00 Zeta_RHIT Anyways, I hear you can have ps capable printers calculate and print Pi endlessly :)
13 18:26:00 tommost I wasn't able to turn in an assignment because the damn printer wouldn't print. I was quite pissed.
13 18:26:00 Zeta_RHIT I've just discovered the most amazing thing ever
13 18:26:00 tommost Someone should do that... well, not endlessly.
13 18:26:00 Morasique i don't even bother printing to the 4 printers closest to me anymore, i print to O200 now
13 18:26:00 Zeta_RHIT my printer, a brother mfc420cn has cartridges you can get on ebay
13 18:26:00 Zeta_RHIT it's cheaper than laser :)
13 18:27:00 Zeta_RHIT $100 network inkjet :)
13 18:27:00 tommost Morasique: Why there?
13 18:28:00 Zeta_RHIT the cartridges come out to like 3 bucks apiece... it's cheaper than even the refils
13 18:28:00 Zeta_RHIT And fuqua helped me get it finally working under ubuntu happily :)
13 18:28:00 Zeta_RHIT cups is death :(
13 18:29:00 Morasique tommost: it's the closest one that works reliably, i never have problems with it. bsb, speed, o157 and o257 have all failed me
13 18:29:00 tommost Hmm. Awfully long walk, though.
13 18:30:00 auchter plus, the reshall (well, most of them) can't duplex
13 18:30:00 Morasique well, i usually print right before i go to class and hope it works. i live on the edge
13 18:30:00 Zeta_RHIT heh
13 18:30:00 auchter s/reshall/reshall printers/
13 18:30:00 andy753421 http://www.wizards.de/~frank/pi.ps
13 18:31:00 andy753421 hehe, i like the the google search shows pi as the description
13 18:32:00 Zeta_RHIT what did you search for?
13 18:32:00 andy753421 "postscript calculate pi"
13 18:32:00 Zeta_RHIT cool
13 18:32:00 auchter andy753421: check the skinner printer, as apparently that's the default that i just printed to.
13 18:33:00 andy753421 auchter: it's warming up, give it a couple minutes
13 18:33:00 Zeta_RHIT heh
13 18:34:00 auchter i just printed it here, looks interesting
13 18:34:00 andy753421 yep, i now have a paper with 1000 digits of pi
13 18:36:00 auchter a lot of printers have hard drives in them, i wonder if you could port AFS to postscript and utilize that...
13 18:36:00 Morasique you should figure out a way to get the printer displays to just scroll pi continuously
13 18:37:00 andy753421 auchter: doubt it, does postscript have file access routines?
13 18:38:00 Zeta_RHIT rofl
13 18:38:00 auchter it was a joke.
13 18:38:00 Zeta_RHIT if you look at the code, it has a setting to force the printer to allow the job an hour to calculate
13 18:38:00 auchter you didn't think i was that crazy, did you?
13 18:38:00 Zeta_RHIT else jobs will time out
13 18:38:00 andy753421 auchter: yes
13 18:38:00 Zeta_RHIT yes we do, auchter
13 18:39:00 auchter haha, good to know
13 18:40:00 Zeta_RHIT max. 262136 with that code :)
13 18:41:00 Zeta_RHIT It's probably good that I'm off-campus and can't play with that atm...
13 18:41:00 auchter you could ssh into phantom.cs or voodoo.cs and do it..
13 18:41:00 Zeta_RHIT :(
13 18:43:00 Zeta_RHIT I really wish some hackers would just disassemble the network completely... force IAIT to learn how to set up a network properly
13 18:43:00 auchter the network setup seems fine to me
13 18:43:00 tommost How is it set up wrong?
13 18:43:00 auchter what problems are you having?
13 18:43:00 Zeta_RHIT They could have a bloody field day on our servers right now
13 18:43:00 andy753421 Zeta_RHIT: actually, i sort of like it being completely unsecured
13 18:43:00 tommost Aside from Gigabit, of course.
13 18:43:00 Zeta_RHIT I was going more for the software end
13 18:44:00 Zeta_RHIT I've actually gotten a decent response as far as gigabit goes
13 18:44:00 tommost Then enabled it for you?
13 18:44:00 tommost *They
13 18:44:00 Zeta_RHIT It would apparently cause hell with all the printers and 10/100 devices on the network atm
13 18:44:00 Zeta_RHIT no
13 18:44:00 tommost Ah.
13 18:44:00 Zeta_RHIT I'm off-campus in any case :)
13 18:45:00 Zeta_RHIT anyways, I should really do homework now... afk
13 18:45:00 auchter gah, multithreading in java is horrible.
13 18:46:00 Morasique new Thread(new Runnable() {public void run() {do stuff}}).start(); ?
13 18:47:00 auchter more like it's a problem when threads are deadlocking even when you're pretty sure they shouldn't be.
13 18:54:00 Zeta_RHIT anybody run an nxserver?
13 18:55:00 Zeta_RHIT I hear they're rather excellent at using client acceleration vs. traditional vnc, etc
13 18:55:00 Zeta_RHIT not been able to get it working though :(
13 18:58:00 Zeta_RHIT sounds like a no...
13 19:44:00 ferrelaj who
13 19:45:00 tommost what
13 19:45:00 ferrelaj who
13 19:45:00 ferrelaj duh
13 19:45:00 tommost when
13 19:45:00 tommost where
13 19:50:00 Zeta_RHIT adds "how" and "why"
13 19:51:00 auchter and my personal favourite: which
13 19:51:00 ferrelaj which witch?
13 19:51:00 tommost whom
13 19:54:00 ferrelaj mohw
13 20:37:00 rr72 whats ze weather?
13 20:55:00 ferrelaj decidedly "up"
13 20:57:00 Morasique true
13 21:49:00 collinjc I take it the internet on campus went down briefly?
13 21:57:00 povilus-desktop looks like it
13 22:10:00 rr72 collinjc~ netsplit
13 22:11:00 collinjc Awesome.
13 22:11:00 rr72 -dmwaters- {global notice} Good day all, I apologize for the netsplits, we had some maintenence due on a couple servers but it's over now. thank you for your patience, and thank you for using freenode!
13 22:12:00 rr72 that explains irc but I can't tell you about the campus because I am not there
13 22:12:00 rr72 night all
13 22:12:00 rr72 need to get my deposit in for 12
13 22:12:00 rr72 er '12
13 22:31:00 Blazeix auchter: do you have a runaway java process on addiator?
13 22:31:00 Morasique don't we all?
13 22:34:00 Blazeix parriskn and shieldga are both running 100% cpu usage with a program called icfb.exe
13 22:34:00 auchter well, it's not runaway per se
13 22:34:00 auchter yeah, that's cadence
13 22:34:00 auchter they're both logged off, that needs to be killed
13 22:35:00 Morasique top just told me auchter's java process is using 435% of the cpu. that's interesting
13 22:35:00 auchter i do what i can
13 22:36:00 Blazeix hmm that's down from 599%
13 22:36:00 auchter it'll be there in a minute
13 22:36:00 Blazeix doing anything interesting?
13 22:36:00 auchter sliding blocks
13 22:38:00 collinjc There are times when I look at this window and can't help but laugh.
13 22:39:00 Zeta_RHIT aye :)
13 23:00:00 ferrelaj anyone have any experience using Skype on Ubuntu?
13 23:22:00 Blazeix ferrelaj, I haven't but have you looked here? https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Skype
13 23:50:00 andy753421 auchter: debian?
13 23:51:00 andy753421 seems like a bit of a compromise between slackware and ubuntu :)
13 23:53:00 auchter i'm certainly fine with it (i'm actually considering a switch to it over break), but i admit to not having much experience with it
13 23:54:00 auchter what would it gain us over slack?
13 23:54:00 andy753421 apt-get
13 23:54:00 auchter (the losses are obvious, no slack)
13 23:54:00 auchter there's some crazy apt-get-esque package manager for slackware, iirc
13 23:54:00 auchter slapt-get?
13 23:54:00 auchter it's been years since i used slackware though
13 23:55:00 andy753421 yea, i've never really used it though, and I don't know how much I would trust it
13 23:55:00 auchter i had issues with it, but again that was a while ago
13 23:55:00 andy753421 (i also want to play with debian)
13 23:55:00 auchter yeah, i do as well.
13 23:55:00 auchter i'm reformatting over break and planning on installing it instead of gentoo for now
13 23:55:00 auchter and i'm also not going to install X, i think
13 23:56:00 auchter 1920x1200 framebuffer will suffice, i think
13 23:56:00 andy753421 good luck with that
13 23:56:00 andy753421 can't you still run gtk stuff in framebuffer?
13 23:57:00 auchter i didn't know that, but it appears that you can
13 23:57:00 auchter i was just planning on using graphical links for browsing
13 23:57:00 auchter it's actually not too bad
13 23:58:00 andy753421 what about cad stuff?
13 23:58:00 auchter damn, i knew i didn't think this through...
13 23:59:00 auchter so, i'll install X for last resort usse
13 23:59:00 Morasique for a commonly used site, yubnub is down all the time
14 00:02:00 auchter i'm also hoping dvtm development continues and they get it as fast as screen
14 00:02:00 auchter that would be the ultimate
14 00:03:00 andy753421 out of curiosity, does that use gnt?
14 00:04:00 auchter no, i don't think so
14 00:22:00 andy753421 auchter: do you by any chance have a plan 9 cd?
14 00:25:00 auchter yeah
14 00:26:00 auchter why?
14 00:26:00 andy753421 can you bring that to the LUG meeting tomorrow? I want to try booting one of the OS lab computer with it
14 00:26:00 auchter yeah, will do
14 00:26:00 auchter oh, is someone (was it will?) giving that version control presentation tomorrow?
14 00:27:00 tommost The wiki has been mod_rewrite'd! I'm happy!
14 00:31:00 andy753421 tommost: yea, i changed a bunch of stuff around a couple days ago, All the lug stuff now resides in /var/www/rhlug/htdocs/ instead of /var/www/localhost/htdocs/public/wiki/. Should make it a lot easier to transfer to the server once we can buy one
14 00:33:00 andy753421 also means we dont have to have /{irc,gpg} as subdirectories of the wiki install folder =D
14 00:42:00 auchter andy753421: so when are they planning on getting rid of the os computers?
14 00:42:00 andy753421 auchter: I'm not sure, i just heard that they were going to get some really nice once (like 8Gb ram and such)
14 00:43:00 auchter perhaps we could consult with someone as to the timeframe as well as what will happen to the machines
14 00:43:00 auchter maybe pitch the idea of getting a 4-5 box plan9 network going
14 00:45:00 andy753421 yea, remind me tomorrow and I'll ask someone (assuming they boot)
14 01:40:00 andy753421 auchter: so if I made i2c a directory instead of a device, any idea where it would go?
14 01:41:00 andy753421 /dev, /sys, or /proc?
14 01:45:00 auchter hm, a very good question
14 01:46:00 auchter i would say /dev still, but i don't really have much justification
14 01:46:00 auchter except that it will be treated as a raw device
14 01:53:00 andy753421 might work to do something like usb and have a bunch of /dev entries like /dev/i2c_x.y where x would be the adapter an dy would be the slave (is that what it's called?)
14 01:55:00 auchter yeah, the slave address
14 01:56:00 andy753421 looks like you would still need IOCTL for things like I2C_{TENBIT,PEC,FUNCs,RDWR} but those seem a bit more optional
14 01:57:00 auchter we won't be using 10-bit addressing, and the only other useful one is RDWR, but that is not a huge deal
14 01:58:00 auchter yeah, looking over the doc again, PEC is only for SMBus, which we aren't using
14 01:58:00 auchter and I2C_FUNCS isn't very important, we can just assume that we have the desired functionality
14 01:59:00 auchter I2C_RDWR i'm trying to come up with a case in which it would be necessary, and i can't think of one
14 02:00:00 andy753421 ok, you would be able to ioctl all those on the individual devices though, so it wouldn't be a big deal
14 02:00:00 auchter yeah, but i'm just saying that it most likely won't be used
14 02:00:00 andy753421 alright
14 02:01:00 Morasique auchter: (reading the log) will said he's doing the version control presentation
14 02:01:00 andy753421 will the machine we just ordered be suitable for testing this stuff?
14 02:02:00 auchter yes, essentially the bare minimum hardware for testing is a parallel port
14 02:02:00 auchter you can use freya, i have it's parallel port scoped up right now
14 02:02:00 andy753421 alright
14 02:02:00 auchter Morasique: alright, i just couldn't remember for sure
14 02:03:00 auchter andy753421: i'm eventually going to get a pic wired up with an rs-232 level shifter so we can use it as a test slave
14 02:03:00 auchter that way we can use minicom to connect to the pic to see messages sent to it
14 02:04:00 andy753421 alright,
14 02:05:00 auchter well, i'm leaving for the night so i'll respond to anything else tomorrow then i suppose
14 02:05:00 andy753421 alright
14 02:08:00 andy753421 auchter: there's a kernel driver under 'I2C Support -> I2C Hardware Bus support -> Intel 82801' and it says ICH6 chips (what the dell's have) are supported so I'm going to try compiling that as a module
14 02:09:00 andy753421 auchter: I have no idea how to use it though..
14 02:25:00 andy753421 auchter: looks like it's not working (no devices show up, and nothing useful in dmesg)
14 02:28:00 andy753421 my guess is that it doesn't work with ICH6m
14 02:51:00 Morasique andy: you wrote the wiki entry on running your own public machine, right?
14 02:51:00 andy753421 yea
14 02:52:00 Morasique where'd you find out about that LDAPSearch user?
14 02:52:00 andy753421 /etc/ldap.conf on addiator
14 02:53:00 Morasique ah. why didn't i think of that
14 07:21:00 auchter andy753421: so that i2c bus is on your motherboard, used for reading sensors (like temperature sensors)
15 00:10:00 octavious andy753421: do you have the maple.patch file referenced in the wiki?
15 00:10:00 octavious on the Maple page?
15 00:17:00 Morasique octavious: http://lug.phire.org/mw/images/7/7a/Maple.patch
15 00:20:00 andy753421 is confused as to how he previously uploaded a file ending in .patch
15 00:20:00 Morasique i fixed the wiki link
15 00:21:00 octavious thanks
15 02:39:00 TheRoot hey kids. look what I made.
15 02:39:00 TheRoot Huan: do a trick
15 02:39:00 Huan does a somersault.
15 02:41:00 TheRoot and while they're no one around, I think I'll test this one too.

15 02:45:00 TheRoot woo.
15 02:45:00 Morasique it appears to work :)
15 02:45:00 TheRoot indeed.
15 02:45:00 TheRoot Huan: leave
15 02:46:00 TheRoot now then... /msg Huan go to #rhlug should bring him back...
15 02:46:00 Morasique does it respond to anyone's orders?
15 02:46:00 Morasique 'cause i'll remember that one
15 02:46:00 TheRoot give it a shot. :P
15 02:46:00 Morasique Huan: leave
15 02:46:00 Huan You're not the boss of me. Talk to CherubicBadass if you want rights.
15 02:46:00 Morasique damn
15 02:46:00 TheRoot hah.
15 02:46:00 TheRoot I could add you to the list.
15 02:46:00 Morasique i'll be ok :)
15 02:46:00 TheRoot or you could just /nick.
15 02:46:00 CherubicBadass @flip
15 02:46:00 Huan does a somersault.
15 02:48:00 CherubicBadass I wonder if you could /nick to TheRoot and make him leave.
15 02:48:00 Morasique i would think so
15 02:48:00 CherubicBadass yep.
15 02:48:00 TheRoot Huan: Leave
15 02:49:00 CherubicBadass is there a way to see if someone has identified?
15 02:50:00 Morasique i think /whois could do it
15 02:50:00 CherubicBadass hm.
15 02:50:00 Morasique it says my nick is morasique (identified)
15 02:50:00 CherubicBadass that'll take a lot of code.
15 02:50:00 CherubicBadass I could just make the command list only take one person.
15 02:51:00 CherubicBadass !die
15 02:52:00 CherubicBadass oh wait. he's not in here anymore.
15 02:52:00 Morasique have a one-time pad you have to prefix to every order :)
15 02:53:00 CherubicBadass !die
15 02:53:00 CherubicBadass there we go.
15 02:53:00 CherubicBadass well, I'm done playing for tonight.
15 02:53:00 CherubicBadass I'll add something useful to him at some point.
15 02:53:00 CherubicBadass maybe.
15 02:53:00 CherubicBadass gnight.
15 02:53:00 Morasique there should be a wikibot that scans the wiki for answers to questions
15 02:54:00 CherubicBadass hm. I might be able to convince mike to give me credit for doing such a thing.
15 02:54:00 CherubicBadass I'll ask him tomorrow.
15 03:10:00 Morasique aww. andy took away all our fun
15 03:11:00 andy753421 I was not amused by 100 lines of spam in our IRC logs
15 12:55:00 povilusr anyone know how to make a latex block code
15 12:55:00 povilusr so it dosent intirptit any commands within it?
15 12:56:00 auchter begin{verbatim}...end{verbatim}
15 12:58:00 auchter andy753421: i took your idea of dd'ing over the boot^(sector partition) one step further: i just removed my hard drive and gave my laptop to IAIT
15 12:59:00 andy753421 auchter: heh, what was wrong with it again?
15 12:59:00 auchter one of my speakers was blown and a backspace key missing
15 13:00:00 andy753421 alright, i can see them wanting to boot to test the speaker
15 13:00:00 auchter i left a slax cd in the drive and told them that there was no OS installed; he said it shouldn't be an issue
15 13:01:00 andy753421 sounds like a good idea
15 13:01:00 auchter yeah, i didn't want them to take the liberty of fixing the "No bootable partition" message or whatever
15 17:42:00 Morasique this is interesting: http://www.google.com/codesearch?hl=en&q=show:exbY0-Wmtw0:AGRYxgHSzlc:43CPfYo8sOw#first
15 17:43:00 Morasique apparently bourne preferred algol syntax over c, so he defined all the equivalent expressions
15 17:54:00 auchter Morasique: that's one of the craziest things i've seen
15 17:56:00 auchter mode.h is interesting as well
15 18:12:00 tommost I believe that that example is referred to as "death by macros."
15 20:11:00 tommost Victory! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-monitor#Multiple_PC_multi-monitor
15 20:38:00 auchter tommost: i had completely forgotten about that program.
15 20:40:00 tommost I think that I need to buy a fourth monitor.
15 20:49:00 auchter under most circumstances, i prefer to work with one monitor only
15 20:49:00 tommost You don't do much web development, do you?
15 20:49:00 auchter i just wish they were higher resolution...
15 20:50:00 auchter tommost: i think my design philosophy (as nihilistic as it is) kind of rules that out
15 20:50:00 tommost Definitely. For that matter, multiple monitors are also useful for GUI development... which you also spurn.
15 20:54:00 auchter it's not that i spurn them, i (grudgingly) use them when they are appropriate
15 21:04:00 tommost IDNs can't contain the ellipsis :-(
15 21:17:00 auchter that's rather sad
15 21:31:00 tommost The pilcrow .org is unregistered--and it's punycode representation is nice: xn--tba
15 21:32:00 auchter punycode beats web2.0 for the stupidest name in existence
15 21:33:00 tommost At least it doesn't require you to pronounce a decimal point.
15 21:33:00 auchter and at least i don't hear it said/written 10 times per day
15 21:33:00 auchter though it is a helpful indicator of who to avoid
15 21:34:00 tommost xn--j6h.org: U+2668 HOT SPRINGS
15 21:40:00 tommost xn--55g.org: rightwards arrow
15 21:43:00 Morasique how do you find these?
15 21:43:00 tommost http://api.webnic.cc/idnconversion.html to convert to punycode.
15 21:43:00 tommost instantdomainsearch.com to check if they're available.
15 21:44:00 tommost You want a .org--IDNs are displayed as punycode for .com and .net in Firefox.
15 21:46:00 tommost .org seems to be more available, too. I guess that it's maintained better than .com and .net, which are so full of domain squatters.
15 21:53:00 Morasique why does firefox only convert .orgs?
15 21:54:00 tommost I don't know. You can see the TLDs that it whitelists by going to about:config and typing in "network.IDN"
15 21:59:00 Morasique instantdomainsearch seems to be confused, it tells me domains are available, but then they turn out not to be
15 22:01:00 tommost Huh.
15 22:04:00 tommost Try this one: http://www.pir.org/
16 00:32:00 tommost I am now the proud owner of ‽.org
16 00:33:00 Morasique ooo. good choice
16 00:33:00 Morasique i got ◊.org
16 00:33:00 tommost Nice.
16 00:34:00 andy753421 needs to register something..
16 00:34:00 Morasique i tried much cooler ones, but they were taken
16 00:34:00 andy753421 although I don't know if telling people how to input unicode will be any easier than telling them how to type andy753421.ath.cx
16 00:34:00 tommost There are a lot of cool ones that I considered, but they used symbols that most people probably don't have available on their computers.
16 00:35:00 Morasique i think it'd be easier to give them the punycode
16 00:35:00 tommost andy753421: Yeah. Mine's nice and short, though.
16 00:35:00 tommost xn--fwg.org
16 00:35:00 Morasique i like mine, it's xn--01h
16 00:35:00 tommost Nice.
16 00:36:00 Morasique ΑΩ is available (the first is alpha)
16 00:36:00 tommost Fraternity?
16 00:36:00 Morasique no, just the general alpha/omega concept. although that's a good idea
16 00:38:00 tommost wikis it.
16 00:38:00 tommost I get it now.
16 00:38:00 Morasique it occurs to me looking at that alpha that this makes it much easier to fake domain names in links. you could get something like gοοgle.com and the ο's are indistinguishable from the letter o
16 00:38:00 Morasique that seems bad
16 00:39:00 Morasique (ο=omicron)
16 00:39:00 tommost Look at the Wikipedia IDN article--there's a long history of problems.
16 00:39:00 tommost Firefox blacklists a number of characters.
16 00:40:00 tommost See about:config network.IDN.blacklist_chars
16 00:41:00 andy753421 tommost: what registrar did you go with?
16 00:41:00 tommost A Small Orange
16 00:41:00 tommost My host.
16 00:45:00 andy753421 do they do just registrations?
16 00:45:00 tommost Yes.
16 00:45:00 tommost https://customers.asmallorange.com/order/orderwiz.php
16 00:51:00 andy753421 I guess you have to type it in in xn-- format/
16 00:51:00 tommost That's what I did.
16 00:51:00 andy753421 got a coupon I should use?
16 00:51:00 tommost "freecog.net"?
16 00:51:00 tommost That's my referrer. It might work as a coupon.
16 01:42:00 Morasique tommost: i stumbled across your page of greasemonkey scripts, that xkcd one is nice
16 01:42:00 tommost Thanks.
16 03:31:00 andy753421 "Thompson saw that file arguments weren't going to fit with this scheme of things and he went in and changed all those programs in the same night. I don't know how...and the next morning we had this orgy of one-liners." - http://www.bell-labs.com/history/unix/sohedid.html
16 14:29:00 tommost Can you spoof mac addresses on subinterfaces?
16 14:32:00 tommost Because then you could get around bandwidth monitoring issues for a VPN box.
16 14:34:00 tommost Create a subinterface for every user, registered with their Kerberos information, and do all of their VPN stuff via the subinterface.
16 14:39:00 auchter tommost: i just tried it, and it seems that changing the mac of eth0:1 (for example) changes the mac of eth0
16 14:40:00 tommost sighs
16 14:40:00 auchter yeah, that was a really good idea though...
16 14:40:00 tommost Okay, new plan: everyone who needs VPN access gets to buy me an Ethernet card.
16 14:41:00 tommost When I run out of PCI slots, start getting USB devices.
16 14:41:00 tommost Then daisy chain hubs.
16 14:41:00 auchter some of us like decent bandwidth
16 14:42:00 tommost How would it matter? You're capped at 1 Mbps to the Internet anyway.
16 14:42:00 tommost A USB 2.0 10/100 card shouldn't present a bottleneck.
16 14:43:00 auchter http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140207770761&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ebay.com%3A80%2Fsearch%2Fsearch.dll%3Fquery%3D140207770761%26MfcISAPICommand%3DGetResult%26ht%3D1%26ebaytag1%3Debayreg%26srchdesc%3Dn%26maxRecordsReturned%3D300%26maxRecordsPerPage%3D50%26SortProperty%3DMetaEndSort%26fvi%3D1
16 14:43:00 tommost Good idea, but it's PCI-X.
16 14:45:00 auchter they make them in PCI as well, i was going to buy one for my router a while ago
16 14:47:00 tommost Wait a minute... I know that VMWare server can set up networking so that VM's MAC addresses are externally visible.
16 14:47:00 auchter four of those, one of these: http://www.soekris.com/vpn1401.htm
16 14:50:00 tommost Yeah, what I suggested should be possible with network bridging.
16 14:51:00 auchter ah, awesome
16 15:16:00 tommost Actually, it looks like this is all part-and-parcel of using OpenVPN.
16 15:41:00 auchter Blazeix: so, i just started the arch install
16 16:02:00 Blazeix auchter, how is it going?
16 16:02:00 auchter not bad, it's installing packages now
16 16:02:00 auchter it just felt really good to delete all my partitions...
16 16:03:00 auchter this mirror is a bit flaky, though
16 16:03:00 auchter sometimes i'll be downloading at 1.1MB/s, others at 50KB/s
16 16:06:00 Blazeix yeah. I think the easynews mirror is pretty good. The purdue one is too
16 16:06:00 auchter i'm using gatech, but it's done now
16 16:07:00 auchter the installer is much more complex than CRUX's
16 16:08:00 Blazeix you were mentioning the crux just untars stuff and dumps you at the command line
16 16:09:00 auchter yeah, the only thing the installer does is prompt you for the / mount point, and then presents a list of packages
16 16:16:00 auchter well, it booted
16 16:19:00 Blazeix cool. the arch wiki has some useful post install stuff, like optimizing your mirror list and whatnot
16 16:19:00 auchter i'll have to look into that
16 16:20:00 auchter now time to research what the vga number for a 1920x1200 framebuffer is
16 16:26:00 tommost What might cause "cp: omitting directory `easy-rsa/'"
16 16:26:00 tommost The command is "sudo cp easy-rsa/ /etc/openvpn"
16 16:28:00 tommost ?
16 16:28:00 Morasique i always have that behavior, i think it always omits directories unless you include -r
16 16:28:00 tommost Ah, thanks.
16 16:44:00 auchter so, pacman's not bad at all
16 16:47:00 auchter also using the radeonhd driver instead of fglrx and it seems to be working pretty well
16 16:49:00 Morasique i wish my package manager was named pacman, it is impossible to have a better name than that
16 16:49:00 tommost Morasique: Agreed.
16 16:49:00 tommost auchter: Is that the open-source one?
16 16:50:00 tommost Oh, so I just spent ten minutes generating Diffie-Helman key parameters--and got a permission denied when it tried to write them to disk because I forgot to sudo it.
16 16:52:00 auchter tommost: yeah
16 16:54:00 tommost Do you know what the difference between radeonhd and radeonhd-dbg packages would be? Is the second a debug version?
16 16:54:00 auchter hm, that's what i would guess
16 17:01:00 auchter and of course now, after i've deleted everything, i remember to back up /etc
16 17:01:00 tommost Damn.
16 17:02:00 tommost My sympathies.
16 17:02:00 tommost (One for each inode in /etc.)
16 17:15:00 auchter weak, you can't install two packages simultaneously
16 17:16:00 tommost Is there a package manager that *can* do that?
16 17:16:00 auchter emerge can
16 17:17:00 tommost Can that mess stuff up?
16 17:17:00 andy753421 never has for me
16 17:17:00 tommost Neat.
16 17:32:00 Morasique tommost: (from a half hour ago) *-dbg packages include the dbg symbols so you can run them through stuff like gdb
16 17:32:00 tommost Okay, thanks.
16 17:48:00 auchter fun fact: you can get to the schedule lookup page by using the ldap user
16 17:48:00 tommost Brilliant!
16 17:48:00 tommost File a ticket?
16 17:49:00 auchter nah, i like it
16 17:49:00 auchter plus, then they might close the ldap user, making life difficult for others
16 17:49:00 tommost Good point. Never suspect a rational reaction when it is possible to inconvenience others by doing something reflexively.
16 17:50:00 tommost Can you log into Angel?
16 17:50:00 auchter i just tried, and it said the account is valid, but has no permission to view the site
16 17:51:00 auchter now what's fun is logging into the bandwidth usage tool with that account...
16 17:51:00 tommost Can you register a MAC address with it?
16 17:52:00 auchter i don't think you can with any account anymore, i thought they changed it all around
16 18:32:00 tommost Has anyone here ever set up OpenVPN?
16 18:36:00 andy753421 you could always tell them to allow anonymous searches on LDAP like everyone else does
16 18:45:00 Morasique you can get to the iait ticket page too, but then you get an error
16 18:47:00 Morasique if they ever fix the registration page, i bet you could register MACs with it
16 18:47:00 auchter anyone tried email with it?
16 18:48:00 Morasique i tried it with webmail and got an internal server error
16 18:48:00 auchter haha
16 18:49:00 auchter so, i'm pretty happy with radeonhd, i'd recommend all nw8440 users to give it a try
16 18:49:00 auchter video playback isn't great (no xv), but sdl works well enough
16 18:56:00 andy753421 there's apparently a CSSE_SVN_LDAP user as well
16 18:57:00 andy753421 doing a search with a search base of 'ou=Systems,ou=RHIT Users,dc=rose-hulman,dc=edu' is interesting
16 20:48:00 auchter so i'm giving truecrypt a try now
16 20:49:00 auchter one complaint so far is that, unlike encfs, you have to specify at creation time how large the volume should be, but i guess it's necessary for the way it works
16 20:49:00 andy753421 auchter: so, did you figure out how to encrypt the entire disk?
16 20:49:00 Morasique it's always been able to encrypt entire disks, i have two externals that use it, i think the new feature is that it can encrypt your boot disk now
16 20:50:00 Morasique but you'd have to format to do it i think
16 20:50:00 auchter for right now i'm just creating a volume as file in /home to mount after boot
16 20:51:00 andy753421 Morasique: so does it put the decryption code in the MBR or something?
16 20:51:00 Morasique i have no idea how it works, i've never tried it, i just heard that was the big new feature in truecrypt 5
16 20:53:00 auchter the reason i'm not doing whole disk encryption is that i want it to boot without me having to enter in any passwords
16 20:53:00 auchter as well as let me log in without decrypting anything
16 21:42:00 gobeavs when using the ubuntu install disc to resize an existing windows partition, does it move existing data on the hard disk when resizing or does it just chop off whatever is needed at the end of the disk? The problem is I can't get my defrag tools to scrunch the data to the front of the hard disk quite enough
16 21:43:00 tommost From ~/.maple/11/maplerc:
16 21:43:00 tommost Length of Startup in ms=7759
16 21:44:00 tommost What happens if I change it? ;-)
16 21:50:00 auchter same thing that happens when you divide by zero
16 21:51:00 tommost It complains about a missing semicolon?
16 21:52:00 Morasique gobeavs: defragmenting shouldn't matter, the partition resizer can handle moving data around if it needs to
16 21:52:00 Morasique what problem are you having?
16 22:02:00 gobeavs Morasique: alright - thanks
17 00:03:00 auchter so i've started to use p9p's plumber again and i absolutely love it
17 00:03:00 tommost What is it?
17 00:03:00 auchter http://plan9.bell-labs.com/wiki/plan9/Using_plumbing/index.html
17 00:04:00 andy753421 auchter: what all are you using it for?
17 00:05:00 auchter videos, images, documents, etc. it's just more convenient to type "plumb x.doc" (or my alias "p x.doc") and have it spawn the appropriate program
17 00:06:00 andy753421 ok, have you got it set up with thunderbird/firefox for opening files?
17 00:06:00 auchter yup
17 00:07:00 auchter well, kind of, i haven't figured out (or looked into really) how to make a catch-all for firefox's default program to open the file
17 00:07:00 andy753421 ok
17 00:08:00 tommost So it's basically a file-type association thing that also does plain text?
17 00:09:00 andy753421 not really, there's more to it than that
17 00:09:00 andy753421 it would be more like it's an association thing that also does file-types
17 00:10:00 tommost So it's more a generic pattern-matching facility?
17 00:10:00 andy753421 yes, but it matches more than just plain text, it also takes into consideration things like the current working directory
17 00:12:00 andy753421 http://swtch.com/plan9port/man/man7/plumb.html
17 00:22:00 auchter awesome, found a rxvt-unicode plugin that plumbs the selection when you right click
17 01:31:00 auchter someone should make a firefox extension to execute plumb on selected text
17 01:39:00 auchter hm, almost as good, in .xbindkeys: "plumb `xclip -o`" control + b:3
17 20:54:00 tommost I am sad. A Small Orange refunded my $10 for xn--fwg.org: "We cannot register these kinds of domains."
17 20:56:00 auchter i don't understand, it's just a normal domain...
17 20:56:00 auchter i don't see why they would distinguish it
17 20:57:00 tommost Well, looking at registrars that claim to support IDNs, it appears that you have to specify a language.
17 20:58:00 tommost Can anyone suggest a reputable IDN registrar?
17 21:00:00 auchter it seems that you can only register .com and .net IDNs with godaddy
17 21:03:00 Morasique i didn't understand the need to specify a language when i was trying with godaddy, what language would you put for something like xn--fwg.org?
17 21:03:00 tommost Exactly.
17 21:04:00 tommost Apparently .orgs are only available in certain languages, though: Danish German Hungarian Icelandic Korean Latvian Lithuanian Polish Spanish Swedish.
17 21:04:00 tommost I'd go with Icelandic, of course.
17 21:05:00 auchter i'd go for !Kung
17 21:05:00 tommost But xn--fwg.org is showing up as taken.
17 21:06:00 tommost It doesn't seem to be available.
17 21:07:00 tommost (!Kung, I mean. Great idea, BTW.)
17 21:08:00 auchter yeah, something tells me there aren't many !Kung speakers on the internet
17 21:08:00 tommost Yup.
17 21:08:00 tommost Of course, there are what, 300,000 Icelandic speakers, total?
17 21:10:00 auchter that's a few orders of magnitude greater than the number of ter sami speakers
17 21:11:00 tommost It's a lot fewer than any of the other options for .org.
17 21:11:00 andy753421 tommost: i think it's just broken, it tells me everything is unavailable
17 21:12:00 tommost What? Dynadot?
17 21:13:00 andy753421 i typed a bunch of random letters into the godaddy IDN search and it still said that it was taken
17 21:13:00 tommost Huh.
17 21:16:00 andy753421 I wonder if you have to pick characters from the language you select
17 21:17:00 tommost http://www.dynadot.com/help/question.html?aid=55
18 00:02:00 auchter so my mouse just stopped working, and dmesg says: "psmouse.c: bad data from KBC - bad parity"
18 03:48:00 Morasique has anybody run maple on linux under java 6?
18 03:48:00 Morasique i thought people had done it without issue, but i keep running into problems
18 03:50:00 andy753421 Morasique: are you overriding the java library packages with maple?
18 03:51:00 Morasique should i be? i thought i was supposed to do the opposite, i'm ignoring maple's jre and trying to use the native one
18 03:51:00 Morasique i ran into a problem with a missing library, which it turns out was in java4 but not 5 or 6, so i downloaded the jar and included it manually, and now i get the splash screen and then an ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException
18 03:52:00 Morasique i'm installing java 5 to see if it has the same problem
18 03:52:00 andy753421 i think i've done it, how are you ignoring maples JRE?
18 03:53:00 andy753421 i've used java 1.5 with maple 10, but that was a while back
18 03:53:00 Morasique i renamed the jre folder to make sure maple wasn't using it, and edited the bin/maple script to point to my jre instead of maple's
18 03:53:00 andy753421 ok, that's what I did
18 03:54:00 andy753421 what maple version are you using? (I think i used 10, but it may have been 9)
18 03:54:00 Morasique i got the same exception with java 5
18 03:54:00 Morasique maple 10
18 03:54:00 andy753421 ok
18 03:55:00 Morasique i'll look around online to see if anyone else ran into it, i was just seeing if i was the only one having problems
18 04:01:00 andy753421 doesn't seem to be working for me with 10 and 1.6
18 04:02:00 Morasique i can't get 1.5 either, i get the same errors, and i know most people have it working with 5, i'm not sure what's different with mine
18 04:02:00 andy753421 i don't have anything but 1.6 anymore
18 04:03:00 Morasique so do you not have maple on your laptop?
18 04:03:00 andy753421 well, i have the packages maple, but I don't count that
18 04:03:00 andy753421 er, the jre packaged with maple
18 04:03:00 Morasique ah
18 06:32:00 andy753421 haha, from the wikipedia "List of emerging technologies":
18 06:33:00 andy753421 Emerging technology: Artificial Intelligence
18 06:33:00 andy753421 Things potentially made obsolete: Human brain
18 07:08:00 andy753421 '];
18 07:18:00 auchter +5, Insightful
18 07:19:00 auchter i'm pretty sure that keypattern (and the resulting return) could be generated by slamming your head against a keyboard
18 07:25:00 andy753421 (also, a theory of comp book)
18 07:27:00 andy753421 auchter: haha, you have 8:00 finals
18 07:28:00 auchter indeed i do, why else would i be awake at this ungodly hour
18 07:28:00 auchter (besides studying for theory of comp, which i'm not taking)
18 07:29:00 andy753421 auchter: actually, doing the take home test that was due friday
18 07:30:00 auchter i'm going to miss that flexibility in due dates...
18 12:19:00 auchter 2.6.25-rc2: Funky Weasel is Jiggy wit it
18 12:38:00 andy753421 last time linus said the kernel didn't have any bugs, it formatted my root partition on the first boot...
18 13:16:00 auchter i for one trust the funky weasel
18 15:33:00 auchter sed -i 's/private |protected /public /' *.java
18 15:33:00 auchter that does wonders for cutting down on unneeded code
18 15:33:00 TheRoot so auchter, I'm nearly done expanding my IRC bot for mike's semantic web class...
18 15:33:00 Morasique and a thousand OO programmer all burst into tears at once
18 15:34:00 Morasique s/programmer/programmers/
18 15:34:00 auchter haha
18 15:34:00 auchter TheRoot: yeah? made a wiki bot?
18 15:34:00 TheRoot nope. something more funny.
18 15:34:00 TheRoot given a song title and artist name, it grabs the lyrics off of lyricwiki.org using their web service.
18 15:35:00 TheRoot then it passes it through three foreign languages then back to english and outputs the results to channel.
18 15:35:00 auchter that's horrible, haha
18 15:36:00 TheRoot shrugs. mike liked it and said to go through with it.
18 15:36:00 TheRoot I've got everything done but the translation bit.
18 15:36:00 TheRoot just need to find a web service that does some translation.
18 15:37:00 auchter i meant horrible in terms of usefulness, though i'm sure the output would be hilarious
18 15:37:00 TheRoot indeed.
18 15:37:00 TheRoot I've seen sample outputs from this kind of thing before and they can be pretty funny.
18 16:54:00 auchter science, technology, lookicanmakemytaglongerthananyotheraslongasitypeuptothelimit, songofthetwomilelinearparticleacceleratorstanforduniversity, eecue (tagging beta)
18 16:54:00 auchter yet again, slashdot wins at tags
18 17:33:00 andy753421 auchter: have you ever experimented with using inferno as a development environment?
18 17:34:00 auchter i've only used it with acme to write some libmo
18 17:34:00 andy753421 oh, that's right, i'd have to learn limbo..
18 17:35:00 auchter it's relatively interesting, actually
18 17:35:00 andy753421 i was thinking it could be a nice way to write cross platform applications in a sane environment
18 17:36:00 auchter yeah, and it's amazingly how lightweight Inferno is
18 17:39:00 andy753421 hm, maybe I could learn inferno as the 'other' language in PLP
18 17:39:00 andy753421 auchter: did you like it?
18 17:43:00 auchter i haven't really used it enough to tell, i kinda got distracted by classes
18 17:43:00 auchter though the lack of documentation is sad
18 17:43:00 andy753421 alright
18 17:44:00 auchter i could never figure out how to implement a linked list, as when trying to do pointers the compiler always yelled at me
18 18:01:00 andy753421 I think i'm going to figure out how to set up limits/limits.conf well and then submit a ticket to IAIT to get them implemented on addiator
18 18:58:00 octavious we need nethack installed on a public machine :)
18 19:52:00 andy753421 How does this look for a limits.conf policy on addiator? (http://pastie.caboo.se/154015)
18 19:53:00 andy753421 default of 1Gb memory limit, 8 hour cpu time limit (1 hour if it's running on all 8 cores), 100 process limit
18 19:53:00 andy753421 max of 28 Gb memory, 8 weeks cpu time, 1000 processes
18 19:53:00 Morasique but....how are we supposed to fork bomb addiator and leave cadence processes running for months if you implement this?
18 19:55:00 andy753421 well, technically, you could still leave a cadence process running for months (specifically, two)
18 20:03:00 auchter looks good to me
18 20:03:00 auchter now what we need is something to detect when a user's program segfaults, then sends them an email with the subject of "Check your damn pointers!"
18 20:07:00 auchter andy753421: i'm marginally disturbed by this message from kevin about the new computer: there ram slots dont go deep enough, so the contacts were connecting. i was able to get it in though
18 20:07:00 andy753421 auchter: did you put together the robotics computer?
18 20:07:00 andy753421 heh
18 20:07:00 auchter no, i had no part in it
18 20:08:00 andy753421 ... this could be bad
18 20:09:00 auchter yeah, i wish i would have known about this prior to leaving campus
18 20:11:00 auchter so, slackware? or debian?
18 20:11:00 andy753421 i'm thinking debian
18 20:11:00 auchter sounds good to me
18 20:14:00 auchter so for the OS exam, we got to use our laptops, however we couldn't touch the keyboard...
18 20:17:00 andy753421 hu?
18 20:18:00 auchter we were only allowed to use the mouse to navigate through notes, angel, etc.
18 20:18:00 andy753421 how did that work out?
18 20:18:00 auchter apparently it was to prevent cheating in some way...
18 20:18:00 andy753421 you should have got an on-screen keyboard
18 20:18:00 andy753421 and used thtat
18 20:18:00 auchter luckily i spawned a terminal and went to the right directory
18 20:19:00 auchter i just plumbed everything by rightclicking
18 20:19:00 andy753421 hehe, nice
18 20:19:00 auchter yeah, it saved me.
18 20:24:00 auchter back to inferno, another nice thing is how cross-platform it is, moreso than java
18 23:28:00 TheRoot btw, folks, if you want to see the bot sing mangled songs, head over to #theconcerthall.
19 00:58:00 andy753421 So I've got mutt/procmail/fetchmail/nbsmtp mostly working
19 00:59:00 andy753421 I would give it a rating of about 7/10
19 00:59:00 andy753421 (thunderbird:5/10, evolution:3/10, claws:4/10)
19 01:00:00 andy753421 and mutt by itself is a 6/10
19 01:00:00 andy753421 maybe 5.5
19 01:01:00 auchter you'll have to elaborate on this...
19 01:03:00 andy753421 #1. I actually _know_ where my mail is. (it's in ~/Mail/*)
19 01:03:00 andy753421 sent mail, saved mail, everything gets stored there, so no more running out of space messages from IAIT
19 01:04:00 andy753421 procmail filteres incoming mail based on regesxes
19 01:05:00 andy753421 i can send mail just as easily by typing 'sendmail' from the command line as I can by running mutt
19 01:05:00 auchter i was more interested in the chain that those programs are in
19 01:06:00 auchter how you actually have it set up, is it all local to your laptop, or do you have some running on your server, etc.
19 01:06:00 andy753421 ah, fetchmail pulls mail off of exchange.rose-hulman.edu (and others) and passes it to procmail
19 01:07:00 andy753421 procmail filters and sorts it and stores it in ~/Mail/
19 01:07:00 andy753421 mutt reads it it from ~/Mail and sends messages by calling nbsmtp
19 01:08:00 auchter ah, ok
19 01:08:00 andy753421 downs sides: fetchmail wants to poll exchange.rose-hulman.edu at a fixed rate instead of using IMAP correctly
19 01:08:00 auchter don't try to send ESR a patch...
19 01:09:00 auchter http://geekz.co.uk/lovesraymond/archive/gun-linux
19 01:10:00 andy753421 nice thing is, i can swap out fetchmail with something else (getmail, fdm, probably others) and everything else stays intact
19 01:10:00 auchter i'll have to give that setup a try after i fail my DISCO final wednesday
19 01:11:00 andy753421 I need to finish getting stuff migrated over, right now I still have some messages (sent, drafts, etc) stored on the exchange server
19 01:12:00 andy753421 and I need to actually write the rules to sort my mail ;)
19 01:12:00 auchter not getting all.campus spam would be nice
19 01:13:00 andy753421 hehe, so the way procmail sorts it is by specifying the file to append the messages to (which is how mbox works)
19 01:13:00 andy753421 so the example has spam being appended to /dev/null
19 01:13:00 andy753421 http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/guide-to-mutt.xml
19 01:14:00 andy753421 (actually the /dev/null example is from the procmail man page)
19 01:14:00 auchter well, i like the syntax so far...
19 01:16:00 auchter yeah, i'll definitely give this a try, and i'm also going to give upas/fs a try
19 01:17:00 andy753421 auchter: do you know what the plan9 variant of fetchmail is called?
19 01:19:00 auchter upas/fs, unless i'm off my rocker again
19 01:20:00 andy753421 it seemed like upasfs was more like a mail reader. It says it can talk to IMAP and POP3 but I wasn't sure if it actually downloaded messages from those and stored them to a file
19 01:20:00 auchter i believe it presents the pop3/imap mailbox as a filesystem
19 01:20:00 auchter from there, you could just cp the contents
19 01:22:00 andy753421 hm. maybe you could have a plumbing rule of sorts that would automatically move messages received from IMAP/POP3 to a local mailbox that's using maildir or mbox
19 01:23:00 auchter that would indeed be nice...
19 01:23:00 auchter i'm not sure how that would work yet, though
19 01:23:00 auchter so it looks like upas/fs presents a file called mbox
19 01:24:00 auchter actually, many of them...
19 01:25:00 auchter oh man, it would be simple to do a plumbing rule for this
19 01:25:00 auchter i missed the part where it sends a message to the plumb port
19 01:27:00 andy753421 I would be that someone's already done that and/or there's a different (better) way of doing it
19 01:28:00 auchter perhaps
19 01:33:00 auchter so it looks like upas/fs doesn't work all that well (at least it didn't 1-2 years ago...)
19 01:33:00 auchter but it doesn't seem to be built by default
19 01:34:00 andy753421 auchter: why do you say it doesn't work well?
19 01:34:00 andy753421 the sources come with p9p and it seemed to build fine, but it won't mount correctly
19 01:35:00 auchter http://www.mail-archive.com/9fans@cse.psu.edu/msg04353.html
19 01:35:00 andy753421 but I've never actually mounted anything in p9p before so I might be doing something wrong
19 01:35:00 auchter BUGGERED='CVS|faces|factotum|lp|ip|mailfs|scat|upas|vncv|mnihongo|mpm|index|u9fs|secstore'
19 01:35:00 auchter from the mkfile, haha
19 01:38:00 andy753421 is there an inferno build of it?
19 01:38:00 andy753421 er, version i guess, since it would have to be done in limbo
19 01:39:00 auchter http://www.vitanuova.com/inferno/man/4/INDEX.html
19 01:39:00 auchter doesn't look like it
19 01:43:00 auchter i wonder if this confusion i feel when reading about plan9 is the same confusion new linux users have...
19 01:43:00 Morasique it's probably similar to the confusion i feel everytime you and andy start talking by yourselves
19 01:44:00 auchter that's normal, i have no idea what i'm talking about myself
19 01:44:00 andy753421 auchter: probably similar to the confusion new linux users felt back in 1994
19 01:44:00 andy753421 but now there's enough gui's that it makes it a bit easier to get started
19 01:44:00 auchter yeah, Linux 95 solved all those issues.
19 01:45:00 andy753421 ah, you FVWM-95 ;)
19 01:45:00 Morasique see, i'm learning linux the opposite way, i keep figuring out the command-line way to do something and then later i'll find the gui way and go "oh. well that's so much simpler"
19 01:45:00 auchter yeah, i'm lazy so i just do the first half
19 01:46:00 auchter though that backfires when artificial restrictions like not being able to use a keyboard are imposed on me...
19 01:46:00 Morasique :D i still can't believe they thought that would somehow defeat cheating
19 01:47:00 auchter yeah, i couldn't believe it either
19 01:47:00 andy753421 someone still needs to take the keyboard off their laptop and then take it to an ESys final
19 01:47:00 auchter too bad i didn't fail ESys
19 01:47:00 octavious i'd do it for orpie, if i didnt already an hp rpn calc
19 01:48:00 andy753421 octavious: drunk?
19 01:48:00 auchter that's what i was wondering..
19 01:48:00 auchter i'm still trying to figure out what he said
19 01:49:00 octavious andy753421: ha no. orpie is an open source CLI calculator that is supposed to be based on the hp series of rpn calculators
19 01:49:00 andy753421 dc ftw
19 01:49:00 auchter bc ftw
19 01:50:00 Morasique zsh/mathfunc ftw
19 01:50:00 andy753421 or.. expr
19 01:51:00 auchter 40K /opt/plan9/bin/bc
19 01:51:00 auchter 60K /opt/plan9/bin/dc
19 01:51:00 auchter bc pretty much wins in every way.
19 01:52:00 andy753421 auchter: except it's not rpn
19 01:52:00 auchter now why did i think it was...?
19 01:53:00 andy753421 and i can't for the life of me remember what that variable you have to set to get arbitrary precision..
19 01:53:00 Morasique i've never understood the allure of rpn, i get prefix and infix
19 01:53:00 auchter dc is apparently aribtrary precision
19 01:53:00 andy753421 '5k 10 3 / p'
19 01:53:00 auchter Morasique: so your calculator display doesn't look like you programmed quake in Lisp
19 01:54:00 Morasique what if i want it that way? :)
19 01:57:00 andy753421 Morasique: then use bc?
19 01:57:00 andy753421 time to make myself some pancakes
19 01:58:00 Morasique i thought bc was infix
19 01:58:00 Morasique i've always been too lazy to actually use it
19 01:59:00 auchter i usually just use maple; it's completely wrecked my mind, so i figure why stop now
19 02:00:00 Morasique i like maple too, but i can't get it working with a decent jre, so it's a very attractive cyan window with yellow buttons, which makes me die inside
19 02:01:00 auchter i rather like the classic worksheet. it starts in no time at all and looks good
19 02:01:00 Morasique that's the one i'm using that looks bad
19 02:02:00 Morasique maybe something is messed up with mine
19 02:02:00 Morasique the regular worksheet looks ok, but i hate the regular worksheet, i'd rather suffer through the ugly classical one
19 02:22:00 andy753421 ~/.vimrc: autocmd BufNewFile,BufRead *.mw set filetype=maple | map mm :%!maple_vim<CR>
19 02:22:00 andy753421 http://andy753421.ath.cx/temp/maple_vim
19 02:23:00 auchter you scare me.
19 02:23:00 Morasique nice
19 02:25:00 auchter andy753421: did you ever hear back from mcleish about the os lab boxes?
19 02:25:00 andy753421 auchter: nope
19 02:25:00 Morasique good luck hearing back from mcleish about anything ever
19 02:34:00 auchter hopefully that XP upgrade on phantom/voodoo goes horribly and they abandon the idea of running windows on any machine ever again
19 02:34:00 Morasique :D first voodoo, next, the whole campus
19 02:35:00 auchter i don't care what people run on their laptops, but on lab computers and such i see no reason for window
19 02:35:00 auchter s
19 02:35:00 Morasique well, i think most people in the department use windows
19 02:35:00 auchter they'll get over it
19 02:36:00 Morasique :) nice. i figure if we can have a dedicated mac for the 5 people in the department who use macs, we can probably have a linux machine or two
19 02:36:00 auchter or three, if you see what i'm thinking...
19 02:37:00 auchter just upgrade to slackware, it's at version 12, so it's got to be better than mac os version 10
19 02:38:00 Morasique that's a well-founded argument, you should go to IAIT with that. "It's TWO better!"
19 02:39:00 Morasique argue that it's logarithmic, so it's 100 times better
19 02:42:00 andy753421 http://www.slackware.com/faq/do_faq.php?faq=general#0
19 02:50:00 octavious heh,
19 02:50:00 octavious taco bell charged me $0.54
19 02:50:00 octavious instead of $5.40
19 02:53:00 Morasique they didn't pick up on that being slightly low?
19 02:54:00 octavious apparently not.
19 07:31:00 andy753421 hehehe
19 07:31:00 andy753421 vim now auto completes Rose-Hulman e-mail address based on LDAP searches
19 11:48:00 auchter andy753421: that's wrong on many levels.
19 11:49:00 auchter might as well start running emacs with viper
19 11:58:00 Morasique i've wanted to write a zsh completion style that completes usernames using ldap, but completion styles confuse me
19 18:00:00 andy753421 auchter: it's not that bad, all the real work is done in a shell script
19 18:01:00 andy753421 'ldap_mail foo' returns a list of 'User N Ame <userna@rose-hulman.ed>''s where either the name or username contains 'foo'
19 19:22:00 andy753421 any suggestions for a lighter weight alternative to xscreensaver?
19 19:22:00 octavious xlock?
19 19:22:00 andy753421 xlockmore?
19 19:23:00 andy753421 looks kind of big too
19 19:38:00 auchter slock
19 19:39:00 auchter http://www.suckless.org/wiki/tools/xlib
19 20:02:00 Morasique when they say "simple screen locker" they mean it, it doesn't even prompt for your password or show what you're typing
19 20:04:00 auchter truthfully, i find both of those features to be useless
19 20:04:00 auchter xlock takes forever to check password and display "Invalid Password"
19 20:04:00 Morasique well, it's not an issue unless you stupidly run slock and then can't figure out how to get out of it
19 20:04:00 Morasique i thought something was wrong and switched to a terminal to kill it, at which point it promptly crashed X
19 20:05:00 auchter haha, yeah, that might be an issue at first
19 20:05:00 Morasique i like it actually, since gnome-screensaver has a habit of freezing on me for some reason
19 20:07:00 auchter yeah, plus (like all suckless programs) the code is very easy to understand
19 20:07:00 Morasique yeah, i'm reading through the sic code right now
19 20:08:00 auchter i think that's what andy uses for luglog
19 20:08:00 Morasique it is, i was messing with it a few days ago, it's useful
19 20:29:00 andy753421 auchter: does slock auto lock after a certain amount of time not typing?
19 20:30:00 auchter no, it doesn't
19 20:41:00 andy753421 looks like I can use xautolock to do that part
19 20:43:00 auchter ah, cool. i never knew about that program
19 21:05:00 andy753421 hehe, i think i just got into an infinite loop of screen lockers
19 21:06:00 andy753421 so i have a script called 'lock' that turns off my music, locks the screen, and turns off the power to the monitor
19 21:06:00 andy753421 and then i thought: hey, i could just call that from xautolock, but it turns out that that script would also be calling xautolock..
19 21:09:00 Morasique that's inconvenient
19 21:09:00 Morasique but secure
19 23:46:00 Zeta_RHIT I know a few of you are doing digilent
19 23:46:00 Zeta_RHIT just found out something awesome
19 23:46:00 Zeta_RHIT someone made an fpga interface module for the lcds the equipment room sells for like 4 bucks
19 23:46:00 Zeta_RHIT http://www.embedds.com/interfacing-hd44780-to-fpga-using-finite-state-machine/
19 23:47:00 auchter i should probably actually start on that project sometime
19 23:47:00 Zeta_RHIT povilus and I are working on it tomorrow
19 23:47:00 Zeta_RHIT I've done a lot on the pcb already
19 23:48:00 auchter if i actually do find time to do what i'm planning on doing, it won't really require any external parts
19 23:49:00 Zeta_RHIT cool
19 23:49:00 Zeta_RHIT ours will :P
19 23:49:00 auchter i would hope so, haha
19 23:49:00 Zeta_RHIT should be fun learning to solder surface mount, too :P
19 23:49:00 auchter what package parts?
19 23:50:00 Zeta_RHIT qfn32
19 23:50:00 Zeta_RHIT the package is .5cm square
19 23:50:00 Zeta_RHIT 32 pins
19 23:50:00 auchter yeah, it shouldn't be horrible, though i've never soldered one before
19 23:51:00 auchter i've only done so-8 and so-16 for ics
19 23:51:00 auchter and 1206 and 0805 for passives
19 23:51:00 Zeta_RHIT nods
19 23:51:00 auchter 0805s are a pain to do, much more difficult than chips that you can actually tack down...
19 23:51:00 Zeta_RHIT I dunno man, this one looks like one of the worst I've sen
19 23:51:00 Zeta_RHIT seen
19 23:51:00 Zeta_RHIT I'd say bga is worse
19 23:52:00 auchter i was just going to say that...
19 23:52:00 auchter at least it's possible to do qfn...
19 23:52:00 Zeta_RHIT you can do bga :)
19 23:52:00 Zeta_RHIT I haven't, but I know it can be done
19 23:52:00 auchter yeah, but not while keeping your sanity
19 23:53:00 auchter don't they make through-hole sockets for qfn?
19 23:53:00 auchter i'm almost positive i've seen them on some pcbs...
19 23:53:00 Zeta_RHIT no
19 23:53:00 Zeta_RHIT qfn is leadless
19 23:54:00 Zeta_RHIT might be vias to connect to other planes
19 23:54:00 auchter http://www.locknest.com/newsite/products/qfn/index.htm
19 23:54:00 auchter ah ha, i'm not insane.
19 23:55:00 Zeta_RHIT oh, yeah those
19 23:55:00 auchter i thought there were smaller models of them, though
19 23:55:00 Zeta_RHIT probably not going to help much, sadly
19 23:56:00 Zeta_RHIT of the sockets?
19 23:56:00 Zeta_RHIT meh
19 23:56:00 auchter yeah
19 23:56:00 auchter ones that don't cost insane amounts
19 23:56:00 Zeta_RHIT dunno
19 23:56:00 Zeta_RHIT either way, I doubt we'll be able to order just a few, etc
19 23:57:00 Zeta_RHIT if we did, they'd probably cost up the bum like those
19 23:57:00 auchter yeah. what chip are you using in qfn32?
19 23:58:00 Zeta_RHIT yes
19 23:58:00 Zeta_RHIT they're audio codecs
19 23:58:00 auchter ah, ok
19 23:58:00 Zeta_RHIT bloody awesome little chips too
20 00:00:00 Zeta_RHIT http://focus.ti.com/docs/prod/folders/print/pcm3793a.html
20 00:00:00 Zeta_RHIT they do so much
20 00:01:00 auchter TI/BB make some awesome audio chips
20 00:01:00 Zeta_RHIT indeed so
20 00:01:00 auchter http://focus.ti.com/docs/prod/folders/print/tpa6120a2.html
20 00:01:00 Zeta_RHIT that's just a stereo one, too
20 00:02:00 auchter i need to make a headphone amp around that...
20 00:02:00 Zeta_RHIT heh
20 00:03:00 Zeta_RHIT did you note the built in amps in the one I pointed to?
20 00:03:00 Zeta_RHIT I dunno how that's possible
20 00:03:00 auchter class d amps are crazily efficient
20 00:05:00 Zeta_RHIT yeah, but still
20 00:05:00 Zeta_RHIT 700mW in that?
20 00:06:00 auchter i wonder what the THD level is at that output
20 00:06:00 Zeta_RHIT probably not so good
20 00:14:00 Zeta_RHIT heh, I assume 10 is a bad number? :P
20 00:15:00 Zeta_RHIT page 15 of datasheet
20 00:16:00 auchter that's probably around what my headphone amplifier is, and it sounds damn good
20 00:16:00 Zeta_RHIT that's for the speaker at full power
20 00:16:00 Zeta_RHIT 700mW
20 00:17:00 Zeta_RHIT that'll blow your eardrums to the middle of your skull if you throw that into headphones :P
20 00:17:00 auchter indeed
20 00:17:00 auchter well, unless you're using AKG K-1000s
20 00:18:00 Zeta_RHIT no idea what those are
20 00:19:00 Zeta_RHIT those expensive as hell?
20 00:19:00 auchter they were reasonable until they stopped making them, but now they are indeed expensive as hell
20 00:19:00 auchter http://www.headphone.com/guide/by-manufacturer/akg/akg-k-1000.php
20 00:20:00 Zeta_RHIT holy jebus
20 00:20:00 Zeta_RHIT 7 watts?
20 00:20:00 Zeta_RHIT what did it do with that?
20 00:20:00 Zeta_RHIT run a little earmuff heater?
20 00:20:00 auchter haha, they're very inefficient
20 00:21:00 auchter plus the drivers are quite a ways from your ears
20 00:25:00 Zeta_RHIT yeah, I guess
20 01:04:00 auchter another interesting thing: http://www.rose-prism.org/moodle/
20 03:58:00 andy753421 well, they've finally manged to peg all 8 cores on addiator with cadence
20 04:02:00 andy753421 In other news, they were apparently already looking at limiting resources it and were planning to set it up after break.. sure..
20 05:13:00 andy753421 heh heh, apparently hillaryclinton.com runs IIS and barackobama.com runs FreeBSD/Apache
20 07:09:00 auchter yeah, limits would be nice...
20 07:14:00 andy753421 hey, people are alive
20 07:14:00 andy753421 apparently, i talk to myself a lot during the night
20 07:15:00 auchter i'm grudgingly awake, yes
20 09:30:00 andy753421 auchter: what x terminal emulator do you use?
20 09:31:00 andy753421 now that my mail client starts up 3 times faster than the terminal I run it in, i feel obligated to find something better than xterm
20 11:12:00 auchter andy753421: rxvt-unicode
20 11:13:00 auchter the client-daemon mode is awesome, as well as the perl plugins
20 14:18:00 andy753421 replaces the ethernet cable going to his server
20 14:18:00 auchter haha, again?
20 14:18:00 Morasique you should binder clip it or something
20 14:18:00 andy753421 heh, no it wasn't unplugged
20 14:18:00 andy753421 i upgraded the firmware on my router last night and was having some issues getting the ethernet cable to make a good connection when I plugged it back in
20 14:19:00 tommost Do it!
20 14:19:00 tommost And bring a cameraman.
20 14:26:00 kleinjt Is the schematic for the motor controller on the robotics SVN for the motor controller ready to be made? (I noticed it magically came online)
20 14:26:00 kleinjt er.. by made, I mean connecting the dots and traces in software
20 14:27:00 auchter kleinjt: well, not completely
20 14:27:00 auchter kleinjt: did we decide if we were going to split it into two boards?
20 14:27:00 auchter one for the h-bridge nad mosfet driver then one for the pic?
20 14:28:00 kleinjt auchter: I'll probably do it, it will be hard to fit all that on a single board with the board size limit with freeware version of eagle
20 14:29:00 kleinjt I should be able to find out which traces need to go the the pic board and just stick them on a header
20 14:29:00 auchter it really shouldn't end up being that large, but it's fine with me
20 14:29:00 auchter ok
20 14:29:00 auchter look into using anderson powerpoles for the power connection from the battery and to the motors
20 14:33:00 kleinjt ok
20 14:34:00 Morasique i added my home directory to my backup script, and it turns out ~/.ies4linux/ie6/dosdevices/c:/windows/profiles/mrozekma/My Documents is a symlink to ~. my poor backup script nearly burst into flames running for 6 hours last night trying to scan all the files in my home directory
20 14:35:00 Morasique is there a program that can show me any circular references in a folder? i just ran into another one
20 14:36:00 Morasique my backup program is running on my vista machine, so it doesn't check for stuff like that
20 14:45:00 andy753421 Morasique: i don't know if there's a program to do it, but 'readlink [-f]' might be helpful
20 15:01:00 auchter so is IAIT ever going to kill these cadence processes?
20 15:18:00 andy753421 i hope so, i've emailed people before and told them to run 'kill -9 -1' and that tends to work, but I don't have anything that I need to do an addiator right now, so i don't really care
20 15:53:00 andy753421 is anyone planning on having a lug meeting tomorrow?
20 15:54:00 TheRoot no.
20 15:55:00 andy753421 ok, that's what I was assuming, but i hadn't actually heard anything
20 15:56:00 TheRoot I'm going to just pretend like I have the authority to back up that statement.
20 15:56:00 TheRoot also, I made huan do something useful now.
20 15:56:00 auchter i think most people are going to be leaving for break
20 15:56:00 TheRoot well, less useless, I should say.
20 15:56:00 auchter but then again, a lug meeting is defined by people using linux gathering in the lab at a predetermined time
20 15:57:00 auchter so technically there could still be a meeting
20 15:58:00 andy753421 feels scared
20 16:12:00 TheRoot wha ha ha!
20 16:14:00 TheRoot Huan: do a trick
20 16:14:00 Huan does a somersault.
20 16:14:00 TheRoot so yeah, now he can fetch lyrics from lyricswiki and translate them through google translate.
20 16:14:00 TheRoot it makes for some pretty funny results.
20 16:15:00 TheRoot Huan: please mangle still alive | jonathan coulton
20 16:15:00 Huan It was a triumph
20 16:15:00 Huan I make a note here: very great success

20 16:16:00 Huan takes a bow.
20 16:17:00 TheRoot Huan: hide
20 16:20:00 TheRoot huan is already registered. drat.
20 16:20:00 TheRoot I knew I should have done that first.
20 16:26:00 andy753421 auchter: so the only think i don't like about mk so far is that if you run vim from inside it, it complains about 'input not being from a terminal'
20 16:27:00 auchter why are you running vim from inside mk?
20 16:27:00 andy753421 i'm using it to grade homework, (vimdiff correct.log student/output.log)
20 16:28:00 auchter ah, cool
20 16:28:00 andy753421 diff works too, but vimdiff is much easier to see what's different about particular lines
20 16:28:00 auchter could that be fooled using TERM? or is that for something else entirely
20 16:28:00 andy753421 i don't know
20 16:29:00 andy753421 it breaks the terminal too..
20 16:29:00 andy753421 when i exit out of vim, backspace and such are all broken
20 16:31:00 auchter run reset after vim?
20 16:32:00 andy753421 (actually, backspace works, but ^C doesn't) yea, that's what I do
20 16:32:00 auchter ah, ok
20 16:40:00 auchter i plan to use Mk for the motor controller code
20 17:05:00 andy753421 i just stopped by mcleish's office, he says they'll probably have some extra computers from the OS lab that we can use
20 17:05:00 auchter excellent.
20 17:05:00 andy753421 he think they'll be available by the start of next quarter. There's some room in D215 (i think that's what he said, it's the imaging lab)
20 17:06:00 auchter hm, i've never been in there. do our cards get us in there?
20 17:06:00 andy753421 i don't know
20 17:06:00 andy753421 we might be able to convince them to let us put a couple in the normal cs lab
20 17:06:00 andy753421 i'd like that better, and we could always clear off those two tables with all the old CRT's
20 17:06:00 auchter keep the cpu/auth and fs servers in the imaging lab, and terminals in the cs lab
20 17:06:00 andy753421 yea
20 17:07:00 auchter more public machines is always good
20 17:09:00 auchter i wonder if they have any three button mice around...
20 17:10:00 auchter it's kind of a pain to use properly without one
20 17:16:00 andy753421 i bet someone does somewhere
20 17:16:00 andy753421 there's a whole box of old keyboards in the storage room with the robotics stuff, although that doesn't belong to the CS dept
20 17:26:00 auchter speaking of robotics, what should our robot be called?
20 17:27:00 andy753421 spot
20 17:34:00 andy753421 apparently gnu coreutils switched from tar.bz2 to tar.lzma..
20 17:37:00 auchter coreutils-6.9.92.tar.gz 8965 KB 01/12/2008 07:28:00 AM
20 17:37:00 auchter coreutils-6.9.92.tar.lzma 3657 KB 01/12/2008 07:29:00 AM
20 17:37:00 auchter that's quite a significant difference
20 17:37:00 andy753421 yea, where was the bz2 at?
20 17:38:00 auchter not there, heh, but this bz2 of and older version is
20 17:38:00 auchter coreutils-6.8.tar.bz2 5214 KB 02/24/2007 12:00:00 AM
20 19:52:00 andy753421 oh gnu..
20 19:53:00 auchter what now?
20 19:53:00 andy753421 coreutils/src/false.c:
20 19:53:00 andy753421 #define EXIT_STATUS EXIT_FAILURE
20 19:53:00 andy753421 #include "true.c"
20 19:54:00 auchter wait... what?
20 19:54:00 auchter that's stupid in so many ways
20 19:55:00 andy753421 yea, i mean seriously, all it has to do is 'int main() {return 1;}'
20 19:57:00 auchter including .c files is just stupid as well
20 19:57:00 auchter at least to my eyes it burns
20 19:58:00 andy753421 what burns is that it takes them 81 lines to write true.c
20 19:58:00 auchter alright, i'm donwload the source now.
20 20:02:00 andy753421 and what the hell is the point of registering a function to close stdout when the process exits?
20 20:02:00 andy753421 does that make it faster or something?
20 20:03:00 auchter no idea. again, let's compare coreutils/src/cat.c to http://plan9.bell-labs.com/sources/plan9/sys/src/cmd/cat.c
20 20:06:00 tommost What's the point of argv0 = "cat";?
20 20:07:00 andy753421 my guess would be that it's used in libc for something
20 20:09:00 auchter http://swtch.com/usr/local/plan9/9pm/src/libc/port/argv0.c
20 20:10:00 tommost That's enlightening.
20 20:12:00 auchter http://plan9.bell-labs.com/magic/man2html/2/arg
20 20:13:00 andy753421 also: http://plan9.bell-labs.com/sources/plan9/sys/include/libc.h
20 20:14:00 auchter those macros are actually quite nifty
20 20:15:00 tommost Rune?
20 20:16:00 auchter yeah, it's a character (utf8)
20 20:17:00 tommost The encoded character bytes or a codepoint?
20 20:18:00 auchter http://plan9.bell-labs.com/magic/man2html/6/utf
20 20:19:00 tommost But Unicode characters exist in a 32-bit space...?
20 20:21:00 auchter i'm not sure, but considering the ken thompson invented utf-8, i think it's a proper implementation
20 20:22:00 tommost Perhaps it predates 32-bit Unicode.
20 20:23:00 auchter "Plan 9 does not support the 4, 5, and 6 byte sequences proposed by X-Open"
20 21:08:00 Morasique i decided rather than just delete the hourly "mailbox full" e-mail, i'm going to save them. i'm up to 269 of them now because i'm too lazy to clean out my mailbox
20 21:15:00 tommost So one of my server's power supplies died.
20 21:15:00 tommost I'm wondering if anyone here has a power supply (or entirely different machine) for sale.
20 21:16:00 auchter i might have one, but i'm not quite sure
20 21:16:00 tommost Which one? PS or machine?
20 21:18:00 auchter PS
20 21:18:00 auchter the thing is that I think it's a dell, and for most (all?) years they used a pinout different from ATX
20 21:19:00 tommost It needs to support the newer ATX connector, with an additional 4 pins.
20 21:19:00 auchter yeah, i don't have anything like that
20 21:19:00 tommost sighs.
20 21:21:00 tommost It's strange--I have a ton of hardware (mobos, CPUs, etc); several computers worth, but I lack the power supplies to do anything with them.
20 21:21:00 auchter i think that's a sign to buy some powersupplies
20 21:22:00 tommost But decent ones are so pricey.
20 21:30:00 auchter meh, i use cheap ones if i don't have anything better... they seem to work just fine
20 21:30:00 auchter when they die, i get a better one
20 21:30:00 tommost My cheap one just died.
20 21:30:00 auchter perfect time to upgrade then
20 21:30:00 tommost After about a year and 3 months.
20 21:31:00 tommost The trouble is that I don't want to get a nice one and take it apart to fit it into my custom case.
20 21:32:00 auchter buy one off of ebay, i'm sure you can find a cheap decent one
20 21:32:00 tommost I'll look into that.
20 21:42:00 andy753421 I think rose needs to have a class on how to avoid making off-by-one errors
20 21:43:00 tommost andy753421: Elaborate.
20 21:45:00 andy753421 for an array with an odd number of items, 30/49 csse120 students think that it is array[size/2+1] or array[(size-1)/2]
20 21:46:00 andy753421 actually, size-1/2 should work
20 21:46:00 tommost To get the middle element?
20 21:46:00 andy753421 yea
20 21:46:00 andy753421 hm..
20 21:48:00 andy753421 double check to make sure he isn't doing something wrong
20 21:48:00 tommost array[(size + 1) // 2]
20 21:49:00 tommost Wait, no, just size // 2 -- 0-based indices.
20 21:49:00 andy753421 see!
20 21:49:00 tommost Yup.
20 21:50:00 tommost But they don't even know about the floor division operator.
20 21:50:00 andy753421 tommost: actually, this is in C
20 21:50:00 tommost Oh, 120--I just assumed Python.
20 21:51:00 andy753421 eh, whichever
20 21:52:00 auchter is this for that atrocious IntArray assignment i saw floating around the lab?
20 21:53:00 andy753421 auchter: maybe? this once i calculating min/max/mean/median of arrays
20 21:53:00 auchter ah. probably different then
20 21:54:00 auchter it was some "extended array" thing, i saw code printed out... essentially a struct with a integer array, and a variable for storing the size
20 21:54:00 auchter it looked like java, camel case and all
20 21:54:00 andy753421 ah, i think that's the "SmarterArray" assignment
20 21:55:00 andy753421 and yea, it's sad that they're teaching C with camel case
20 21:55:00 tommost We did something like that in 221. Yes, the camel case was annoying.
20 21:55:00 andy753421 i guess that's what we get for teaching java for so long
20 21:56:00 andy753421 tommost: what's standard for python, camel case or underscores?
20 21:57:00 tommost Underscores. See PEP 8.
20 21:57:00 tommost Classes get internal capitalization in all cases, though.
20 21:58:00 tommost And even the standard library isn't too picky about underscores for functions and methods, as long as the first letter isn't capitalized.
20 21:59:00 auchter if you need to separate words, i like underscores. however, much like camel case, it seems to encourage verbosity
20 22:03:00 andy753421 you mean like gtk_page_setup_set_paper_size_and_default_margins()?
20 22:03:00 tommost I'd blame C for that--no namespaces.
20 22:04:00 andy753421 yea, but you would still have setup->set_paper_size_and_default_margins()
20 22:04:00 tommost Granted.
20 22:07:00 andy753421 looks like gtk_color_selection_set_change_palette_with_screen_hook takes the cake for the longest gtk function call..
20 22:24:00 octavious at least its verbose enough to know what it does
20 22:26:00 auchter psh, gtkcsscpwsh() is just as descriptive
21 00:02:00 auchter http://plan9.bell-labs.com/iwp9/papers/11.highperf.lucho.pdf
21 00:03:00 auchter pretty interesting... if 9p is used for supercomputing, i suppose it's not too far of a stretch to use it for motor control
21 00:05:00 auchter but reading that just made me want a ps3 even more
21 00:05:00 TheRoot not to game on though. :P
21 00:06:00 auchter i didn't even realize you could use them for that, haha
21 00:06:00 TheRoot lol. nice.
21 03:50:00 Blazeix Just found the link of potential ubuntu code names.
21 03:50:00 Blazeix https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DevelopmentCodeNames
21 03:50:00 Blazeix I definitely think they should have gone with "Inner-city Iguanodon"
21 17:24:00 andy753421 auchter: are you going to be around campus this break and/ore have you looked at the robotics computer at all?
21 18:42:00 auchter andy753421: no, and no
21 18:43:00 auchter IAIT wins again: We have solved your issue
21 18:43:00 auchter Solution: IAIT has no plans to install DyKnow on the Terminal Server.
21 18:44:00 Morasique yeah, i had a ticket last week asking if they plan on fixing the internet that's been terrible for weeks and i got "Solution: The internet connection is getting more heavily used this year"
21 18:44:00 Morasique that'd be a cause IAIT, but thanks
21 18:44:00 andy753421 did you resubmit a tick saying 'Make plans.'?
21 18:45:00 auchter i'm trying to stay on their good side right now
21 18:45:00 andy753421 auchter: probably a good idea
21 18:46:00 auchter actually, i'm not even sure if it's possible... i seem to recall DyKnow refusing to install on anything but XP
21 18:46:00 auchter i tried to install it on the robotics server, and it complained about incompatible windows versions
22 15:17:00 Morasiqu1 the man page for /bin/true is "do nothing, successfully"
22 15:17:00 Morasiqu1 and /bin/false is "do nothing, unsuccessfully"
23 01:25:00 auchter is there an easy way to delete all messages from your exchange mailbox?
23 01:26:00 andy753421 auchter: fetchmail --all seems to work
23 01:26:00 auchter does that actually delete them though?
23 01:26:00 andy753421 it should, you need to specify --keep if you want them to stay on the server
23 01:26:00 auchter are you using imap or pop3 with fetchmail? i'm using imap and it left them...
23 01:27:00 Morasiqu1 you could try the -K switch
23 01:27:00 auchter ah, so i did specify keep, never mind
23 12:07:00 rr72 what is there to do on sunday nights or thursday nights?
23 12:07:00 rr72 wait so since you reg mac addys
23 12:07:00 rr72 oops
23 12:07:00 rr72 if you have a wireless router will all that traffic look like one persons?
23 12:08:00 rr72 and then just add to their limit?
23 13:55:00 auchter andy753421: what options are you passing to nbsmtp?
23 15:55:00 andy753421 rr72: depends on how you set it up, if you make it a gateway it will be charged to the router, if you use it as a switch then it wont
23 15:57:00 andy753421 auchter: i did everything in rc files, http://andy753421.ath.cx/temp/nbsmtp.pub
23 15:59:00 andy753421 auchter: we should start a wiki page on setting this up
23 15:59:00 andy753421 also, use maildrop instead of procmail. Apparently procmail doesn't exit with error status when something goes wrong, which means that fetchmail will delete the messages off the server
23 16:00:00 andy753421 maildrop exits with !0 status so fetchmail leaves the messages on the server
23 16:04:00 Morasiqu4 i just installed hellanzb, and i'm poking through the source code and discovered this file: http://www.hellanzb.com/trac/hellanzb/browser/trunk/Hellanzb/Elite.py
23 16:22:00 auchter andy753421: so your nbsmtprc helped a bit, but now i'm getting: [<-] 454 5.7.3 Client does not have permission to Send As this sender.
23 16:22:00 auchter do you have mutt just calling nbsmtp, or are you passing it any options? i'm really puzzled by this message as everything else in the log looks fine...
23 16:24:00 auchter http://rafb.net/p/d9RaZr36.html
23 16:33:00 andy753421 auchter: you need to change the fromaddr and/or password
23 16:36:00 auchter both look fine to me. the authentication wouldn't succeed if my password was incorrect, and my fromaddr is (as can be seen from the link) auchtemm@rose-hulman.edu
23 16:37:00 andy753421 do you have a 'set from="Mike Auchter <auchtemm@rose-hulman.edu>"' line in muttrc?
23 16:40:00 auchter set from="auchtemm@rose-hulman.edu"
23 16:40:00 auchter indeed i do.
24 01:13:00 Morasiqu1 remember the thing verisign pulled a few years ago where they just started intercepting all invalid dns requests and serving their own search page? apparently my isp at home does the same thing now
24 01:19:00 tommost My ISP started doing that long ago.
24 01:20:00 tommost Made me hate Charter even more.
24 01:20:00 tommost If you want to deprive them of the contextual ad revenue that they're doing it for, switch to OpenDNS.
24 01:20:00 Morasiqu1 i should look into that
24 01:22:00 tommost Do they cut of slow queries early? Charter did that--sometimes, when an existent server responded slowly they'd intercept with their stupid page.
24 01:22:00 tommost *cut off
24 01:23:00 Morasiqu1 :D i don't know, i didn't experiment with it
24 01:25:00 tommost You'll certainly notice soon if they do--it pissed me off so much that I wrote a Gresemonkey script that replaced their page with a button: "Retry". ;-)
24 01:27:00 Morasiqu1 nice. that wouldn't actually suppress the ad loading, would it?
24 01:27:00 Morasiqu1 i'm not sure how greasemonkey works
24 01:27:00 tommost No, it likely wouldn't, especially if they're text ads.
24 01:28:00 tommost Greasemonkey runs at the "DOMContentLoaded" event, which happens after the HTML has been loaded and parsed, but not necessarily after any images, etc. have loaded.
24 01:28:00 Morasiqu1 text ads? how 90s. it's much more fun to have flash ads that expand over the entire screen and start talking to me while i frantically try to figure out which of the 300 tabs i have open is doing it
24 01:28:00 Morasiqu1 ah, ok
24 01:28:00 Morasiqu1 i think it would still count as a hit for them then
24 01:29:00 tommost Maybe. I wonder about how much they pay for views vs. clicks, though.
24 01:29:00 tommost I mean, I thought that Google ads paid for clickthroughs.
24 01:30:00 Morasiqu1 i always thought that ads required clicks, but i heard a lot of ad services switched to just viewing
24 01:30:00 Morasiqu1 probably because nobody clicks ads anymore
24 01:30:00 andy753421 who cares if it still counts as a view? If you can block it and they still get payed it just saves you money on the bill..
24 01:31:00 tommost That's a point.
24 01:31:00 Morasiqu1 well, when they annoy me i prefer to deprive them of earnings if possible
24 01:31:00 tommost And if you really want to block them, AdBlock Plus will do it.
24 01:31:00 Morasiqu1 otherwise it encourages them to keep doing it
24 01:31:00 andy753421 eh, i would rather have ads that I can block than a higher bill
24 01:32:00 andy753421 it'd suck if google charged a monthly fee
24 01:32:00 tommost The way Charter does it is just immoral--they kill valid requests and display their own ads instead.
24 01:32:00 Morasiqu1 well yeah, i'm fine with ads on webpages, i'm not cool with my isp intercepting invalid requests and giving me an ad page
24 01:32:00 Morasiqu1 it's like they're squatting on every possible url at once
24 01:32:00 Morasiqu1 and it's not like they're giving me a discount for it
24 01:33:00 andy753421 Morasiqu1: sure they are, you just don't notice
24 01:33:00 andy753421 we've got this nice thing called capitalism that makes sure of it ;)
24 01:34:00 tommost Around here they have a nice thing called a monopoly that means that's not really true. ;-)
24 01:34:00 andy753421 tommost: heh, point taken
24 01:35:00 Morasiqu1 yeah, my isp does here too
24 01:35:00 tommost Actually, it's not quite as bad as it used to be here. CenturyTel got into the cable market and there is actually a WiMax ISP too.
24 01:36:00 tommost We switched to CenturyTel because the company's not run by a bunch of drunken monkeys.
24 16:48:00 tommost How does Linux react to CPU and mobo upgrades?
24 16:48:00 tommost Will I need to reinstall anything?
24 17:06:00 auchter most likely no, unless your kernel doesn't have drivers for your new chipset
24 17:07:00 tommost Okay, good. I'd imagine that this won't be an issue with Ubuntu.
24 17:08:00 auchter yes, it will likely work fine
25 06:32:00 andy753421 interesting: /usr/src/linux/Documentation/laptop-mode.txt
25 13:53:00 kleinjt auchter: I've got a draft of the board controller on the SVN, I did it in an airport/on an airplane, so I don't have the powerpoles on it yet (I approximated them with screw terminals). Do you think the design is sane enough to warrant tweaking?
25 13:54:00 kleinjt *motor controller
25 14:49:00 kleinjt auchter: I added a parallel to i2c converter board to the SVN, it is a bit messier than maybe it needs to be to be since it is single layer.
25 15:39:00 Morasiqu4 andy: i would be worried about what laptop mode would do to the hard drive, i would think it would kill its lifespan
25 16:03:00 andy753421 Morasiqu4: why? I would think it would make it last longer (less spinning and such)
25 16:03:00 Morasiqu4 i think it's spinning up and down that wears out the drive, not the actual running
27 12:52:00 Morasique3 does anyone else use pidgin? i'm been having problems connecting to irc recently, i'm not sure if it's something to do with being home, something i broke on my computer or something that happened recently to freenode that messes pidgin up
27 17:21:00 cr2 Morasique3: I've been having the same sorts of problems with Pidgin; I wonder what's up
27 17:53:00 andy753421 Morasique: (if you check the log) pidgin-2.3.1 has been working fine for me here at rose
28 12:39:00 ferrelaj Does the lug have CAT5 cable for sale?
28 12:49:00 ferrelaj I seem to remember someone mentioning that it could be purchased by the foot, was that my imagination?
28 15:50:00 ferrelaj anyone have any ideas on the cabeling?
28 15:54:00 ferrelaj http://www.maniacworld.com/frozen-in-grand-central-station.html
29 11:14:00 Morasique :D it's hard to be more obvious you should be working than "ferrelaj-work@fw.rhventures.org"
